Another “Green Day” set for 2009?
Slowly, but surely. That seems to be the motto of Green Day these days. Since captivating all of us “American Idiots” back in 2004 (yeah, it’s been that long!) and the subsequent gathering of “idiots” all around this “Idiot Nation” (yeah, that was intentional), Billy Joe and Co. have spent the last couple years doing a bit of “talk, but not much walk.”
As far back as last year, Green Day has been discussing the follow up to American Idiot. In fact, this day last year, Armstrong confirmed that the band had already completed 45 songs, many of which were written for the piano, while a few months later, the fearless frontman noted it’d be a fair estimate to assume that the band’s ninth full-length would be out by the end of 2008. Like everyone else, we got excited, and even included the band’s forthcoming effort in our list of “The Big Ones of 2008.” That turned out well…
But you’re probably saying to yourself, while counting on one hand, “don’t worry guys, there are still three months left in 2008.” This is true, and thank you for your support. But if any of the most recent hints left by Green Day say anything, it looks as if it won’t be until 2009 before we finally get our hands on a new LP.
Besides, we don’t really blame the three-piece outfit all that much. The Foxboro Hot Tubs side-project gave us some time to Stop Drop & Roll away from your standard 2008 releases. But I think it’s safe to say that it’s time for some more good old fashion pop punk fury.
So what are these hints, we speak of? Well, for one, the U.K. branch of Warner Music is now accepting sign ups for a “mailing list” intended to keep you informed of all the going ons leading up to the, “release of a new album in 2009!” Add this with all the recent scuttle over who is producing (Butch Vig vs. Joe McGrath?) and it certainly appears as if Green Day has found its way into the studio.
As of now, we’ll play the wait and see game.
