M.I.A. ignores motherhood to work on new Tom Waits cover

The supposedly “retired” and now knocked up M.I.A. has decided that having a baby isn’t going to keep her from recording new material. According to NME, the funky fresh songwriter recently announced that she’s recorded a cover of Tom Waits’ “Way Down In The Hole”! Talk about gaining some serious bonus points, girl!

For those not familiar with the legendary 58-year-old barroom brawl sounding kind of guy (if you aren’t, there is something seriously wrong with you), you might recognize this song as the main theme from the hit TV show The Wire. The lyrics of “Way Down In The Hole” really hit home with M.I.A. and apparently inspired her to collaborate with Blaqstarr on this special cover song.

No further information has been revealed as to when or where we’ll be seeing the selection, taken from Waits’ 1987 album Frank’s Wild Years, but if anything, it not only shows M.I.A. is totally above maternity leave, but that follow up to Kala might be coming along sooner than we expect.

  1. Covering the song prior to The Wire maybe would be bonus points. Bumping this now is like bumping Malvina Reynolds now.
