Live at CMJ 2008: Tickley Feather does Paw Tracks, Patrick Droney shows age doesn’t matter
West Philadelphia’s Tickley Feather played Paw Track’s CMJ showcase at Le Poisson Rouge last night (10/22). Flanked by two very glum, serious-at-work-looking dial fiddlers, Annie aka Tickley Feather performed her echo-heavy, far away-sounding vocals (it’s hard to simply call them songs) as smoke machines puffed in the background.
Tickley Feather’s sounds create their own instant ambiance, but not necessarily one that’s easily accessible if you’re coming right off the street and haven’t prepared for them. However, if I WERE to take acid and then go scuba diving in the coral reef, this is probably what I’d hope things would sound like. Somewhere between Bjork and Boards of Canada.
And now for something completely different. Steps way at Kenny’s Castaway, Patrick Droney was singing his heart out and playing guitar with the ease of a pro twice his age. His website explains he was “awarded the Robert Johnson Star Award in 2006 as the country’s most promising blues musician.” So there you go.
At just 16, Droney’s voice is powerful and his band plays much in the style of bands like Breaking Benjamin and 3 Doors Down, which is no surprise given that Droney collaborated with both Ben Burnley and Chris Henderson on the making of his debut The Other Side, which came out last month.
