The Jackson 5 may reunite, throws music world into frenzy
Forget Zeppelin, The Smiths, and The Kinks! The biggest reunion of 2009 will be…ready? The Jackson 5! Well, at least if Jermaine Jackson has anything to say about it. In an interview with the Australian Associated Press yesterday, the fourth eldest Jackson revealed the legendary music outfit is planning to reunite in 2009 for a new studio album and world tour.
“This has been a long time coming for the Jackson family to get back together…It is just the timing, so what we’ve been doing is working on the music and all the logistics. It is going to be more like a family affair, Janet’s going to open and, of course, the original Jackson 5…Michael, Randy and the whole family … We’re in the studio, we’re planning on being out there next year.”
Of course, all this seems a bit fishy, considering that none of the other Jacksons have really mentioned
anything of the sort, even when accepting the BMI Lifetime Achievement Award in September. Plus, well, there is that other tiny thing - the Michael Jackson factor. Last we checked, he’s still the same old Michael. Hell, even during the interview, Jermaine couldn’t give his brother’s exact location, “I don’t know. I think he’s in Egypt riding a camel or something.” Wow.
So somehow Jermaine is gonna pull his crazed brother off of the camel and drag him back here, allowing him to regain enough composure to perform and record again? I think there’s more of a chance at a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion or new Jeff Mangum album than this.
As of yesterday evening, the whole story has already seemed to lose its luster, especially after people actually began to comprehend just what was being discussed. Add in the Michael Jackson’s recently issued press statement and the reunion rumor seems more like Jermaine’s attempt to drive up his publicity - did we mention he was in Australia to help launch a brand new “greatest hits” TV channel - than anything of actually validity.
“My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we’ve certainly shared many great experiences, but at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them. I am now in the studio developing new and exciting projects that I look forward to sharing with my fans in concert soon.”
But “reunion” is the hot new word in music these dates and this is not the first time Michael Jackson’s name has been in the headlines over the last week. On Saturday, The Sun published a story reporting the pop superstar was in the process of lining up a 30-date world tour. So then again, you never know…
The Jackson 5 did technically reunite for one night in 2000 in celebration of Michael Jackson’s 30th Anniversary Special. Their last studio album, 2300 Jackson Street, was released in 1989.
