Arcade Fire members are very busy, just not with Arcade Fire
Aside from a few pro-Obama appearances here and there, Arcade Fire has really lived up to its self-imposed hiatus. We’ll that is Arcade Fire, the band. It’s members on the other hand, have kept busy over the last few months, investing a good amount of time in a number of side-projects.
First, drummer Jeremy Gara could be found hanging with Kathleen Edwards over the summer and then, Colin Stetson, the band’s touring saxophonist, joined several other high-profile indie rockers to form The Sway Machinery. Whether these two examples served as inspiration for the rest of Arcade Fire is anyone’s guess, the list of new side projects consisting of the band’s members appear to be growing by the day.
While their name sure doesn’t indicate it, Richard Reed Perry and Kelly Pratt, perhaps most known for his trumpet work in concert, have teamed up with LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney and Beirut’s Jon Natchez and Perrin Cloutier for a super group of sorts. Team B as they are called, currently lack a label, but do have a album and one tour date, scheduled for November 10th at Brooklyn’s Union Pool.

Though no longer “technically” a member of Arcade Fire, Brendan Reed’s role with the band is still being used to hype up Clues, a brand new Canadian based outfit consisting of Reed, Unicorns’ Alden Penner and Montreal music staples Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble, and Nick Scribner. After celebrating its New York debut at the Art Gallery last night, the outfit has announced plans for the release of its first studio album in early 2009 via Constellation Records.
If we did our math right, there are now five current or former Arcade Fire members who have occupied by side-projects of late. Sure doesn’t sound like we’ll be getting a follow up to 2007’s Neon Bible anytime soon. Or will we?
The show is in a massive club, almost like a theater, with the front area reserved for standees. So this particular audience is on their feet from the start. Friends from Arcade Fire drop by — they’re in the very early stages of beginning a new recording — as does Dan Levitin, the neuroscientist at McGill who writes about music.
