Omar Rodríguez-López offers “Old Money”

Omar Rodríguez-López has never had a problem finding ways to blow one’s mind away with extroverted guitar solos and his definitely drug-induced experimental rock sound even when without his main outfit, The Mars Volta. Albeit much less publicized, the Puerto Rican guitarist also has quite the solo career to his name - in just the last two years alone, Rodríguez-López has released seven, count ‘em seven, solo efforts. Yesterday, he made it eight with the digital release of Old Money.

Originally planned to be released as the follow up to The Mars Volta’s 2006 Amputechture, the 10-track effort, the musician’s first with Stones Throw Records (more traditionally known as a hip hop and soul label) ultimatly became a solo album because according to Spin, Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s vocals “didn’t fit” with the industrial-friendly sound. That decision worked out well. Not!

Either way, it’s exciting to hear the lovely, lush and extravagant guitar chords of Rodríguez-López once again. And if you believe Wikipedia, God knows we do, this won’t be the last new solo material you’ll hear in 2008.

Snippets of Old Money are available via Stones Throw’s website. The physical version of the album will hit record stores on January 27th.

  1. Yup. Fuck the New World Order. I was pleased to read the song titles as well. Except I would never have the Trilateral Commission as dinner guests.

  2. This album is blatantly exposing the New World Order and the shadow government behind the scenes. google any of these song titles and see what I mean.
