Scott Weiland weighs in on future
You’d have to be an idiot to not know who the Stone Temple Pilots are. They played at your local carnival recently! Didn’t you know? Sheesh. Anyhow, after evacuating the midlife crisis that was Velvet Revolver, Weiland reunited with the former ’90’s post-grunge act, and went out on a sprawling, marginally successful summer tour. While he left Slash & Co. frontman-less, it’s actually been a blessing in disguise for the former heroin addict.
Due out on November 25th, Weiland will be releasing his second solo album, Happy in Galoshes. This should be a relief to all the fans of his previous work, especially considering the man’s only recently been responsible for 2004’s atrocious Contraband and last year’s equally genius, Libertad. Thankfully, the songwriter is trading the cheesy cock rock for the mellow, introspective acoustic pop he trademarked.
It seems there could be a Stone Temple Pilots release in the future, too. That is, if Atlantic Records can stop acting like complete schmucks to certain members of the band. A little legal action always hurts anyone, and Weiland digressed on it recently to MTV News.
“It’s pretty f—ed up, actually,” Weiland told MTV News last week. “I don’t know who we would record for. I’m not into recording for Atlantic Records, and there are some legal issues there. Originally, I was told — and I was told for years — that we were free from Atlantic. I don’t know how it is that [bassist] Dean [DeLeo] and [guitarist] Robert [DeLeo] are free from [Atlantic], and [drummer] Eric [Kretz] and I are not. I have no interest in making a record for a major label. If we were going to make a record, I would want to do it in a way that was much more original and in a more creative fashion.”
Considering the newly reunited act have been writing material together, it would be ridiculous to think that all of that would go to waste. They didn’t start an exclusive, ridiculously awesome fan club online for nothing now, did they? Odds are they’ll release something, but don’t count on anytime soon, at least if Weiland’s words are worth anything…
“When I look at people like Beck and even, unfortunately, Elliott Smith, who was one of my favorite singer/songwriters, the ability to do what you want to do at your own pace is appealing to me,” Weiland said. “You don’t really have any fiduciary responsibility to anyone but yourself. But being in a band, you do. It’s like, you can’t just say, ‘You know what? I don’t want to tour.’ You just can’t.”
Well with that kind of attitude, let’s hope this “gem” doesn’t sit on the barbie for too long. Though, let’s be honest… who’s really waiting in line for a new disc? I think we’re still sifting through and trying to make sense of 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da.
