The Get Up Kids are back for one night, maybe more…

Since early summer, cryptic comments from pianist James Dewees and rumors of album reissues have fueled speculation that The Get Up Kids are planning some sort of comeback. This coming Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri, the five-piece outfit will look to turn these rumors into facts and write the next page of its 15-plus year history with a surprise hometown performance.

In celebration of tenth anniversary of their sophomore album, Something to Write Home About, The Get Up Kids will take the stage at Kansas City’s Record Bar for their first live performance since a farewell tour in 2005.

“We talked to Vagrant about doing a 10-year anniversary edition [of Something to Write Home About] with a DVD and a photo book and all that stuff. Then we thought, ‘Hey, we should play some shows.’ This summer we got everybody on-board. Then we basically told a bunch of people about it and then denied it, just to be contrary.

We weren’t going to do it until next year, but we decided it’d be funny if we just showed up and played a show. We thought about doing it Thanksgiving, like, ‘Hey, we all happen to be home for Thanksgiving …,’ but that didn’t work out.”

If you aren’t one of the lucky 200 kids allowed in - meaning you better get there early because there are no advanced tickets being sold to the show - the Record Bar says not to worry:

We encourage you NOT to come in from out of town for this show unless you are friends or family of the band. The MAN-KIDS have told us that there will be more shows in 2009 when the 10 Year Anniversary Issue of Something to Write Home About is released.

Strangeglue points to the “Be Prepared” t-shirts now being sold on the band’s online shop as further evidence that something bigger than a one-off is coming, “the boys are widely expected to add their names to the forthcoming Bamboozle and Lollapalooza if the rumours are less than exaggerated.”
