The Thermals find “sight,” drummer, and new home
It turns out all one has to sign a ferocious lo-fi band these days is offer the members everything they could ever want. While that may seem easier said to done, that’s all it took for Kill Rock Stars to lure the indie-friendly Oregonians better known as The Thermals.
Explaining the decision in a recent interview with Pitchfork, frontman Hutch Harris revealed all it took for the Washington based music label to sign the outfit away from Sub Pop after six years and three-full length efforts was was little love and…risqué content. After all, isn’t that what we all apsire for in life?
We go with our hearts. I have to tell you it’s a fantastic way to live! Kill Rock Stars showed an enthusiasm that was unrivaled, and they offered us everything we wanted in a contract. I won’t get into specifics, because [it's] nobody’s business! Plus, Maggie [Vail, Kill Rock Stars vice president] sent us naked pictures of Madonna, and you know that usually works.
Speaking of albums - since after all, isn’t that the most important thing? - The Thermals will make good use of the new contract with the release of their fourth studio album, Now We Can See, on April 7th. Described by Hunter as “our best sounding record,” the long-awaited follow up to 2006’s The Body, The Blood, The Machine will feature 12 tracks, running “about 40 minutes.” The release will be headed by a 7″ single and download on March 10.
While the upcoming effort will feature rhythms courtesy of a drum pad, by the time The Thermals head back on the road in early December, Westin Glass will be ready to get in on the fun. The former Say Hi drummer has been tapped to replaced Lorin Coleman, who left the group earlier this year.
Well, I think that’s enough news. I’m going to go blast “A Pillar of Salt” until my head explodes.
