Neil Finn finds some popular friends

Neil Finn finds some popular friends

In 2001, Neil Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz) & Friends put on a series of shows in Australia. Selected performances from these shows found their way onto a live CD/DVD known as 7 Worlds Collide.  Amongst the many musicians who performed were guitar hero Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Tim Finn (Split Enz), Lisa Germano, and Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway.

This year, Finn is starting his project up again, with some notable changes. In addition to a few live appearances next January, he plans on recording a proper studio album with the super group. Although it doesn’t appear Vedder or Tim Finn will be returning, Liam Finn (son of Neil Finn) and K.T. Tunstall will be joining the fray. Oh, and so will four members of Wilco.

It didn’t seem very difficult for Finn to get Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone involved. The timid songwriter came to the Chicago band through the world’s favorite form of communication, the internet, and it was that easy:

“I just shot an email off to them saying ‘this is what we’re doing, I know it’s Christmas …’ but we got an immediate response saying ‘Yeah we’re in’. Bang. I was surprised but delighted.”

- The New Zealand Herald

If that’s not an ideal situation, then you’re aiming that bar too high. Let’s take a roll call: members of The Smiths, Radiohead, and Wilco? All sharing the stage? Sounds pretty awesome, and even better, all proceeds from the recording will be going to Oxfam International.

Anyone know how to fly a plane?
