The Jesus Lizard return in ‘09
No, not the Jesus and the Mary Chain, don’t get too crazy now. In some respects, even better, The Jesus Lizard are reforming and kicking out some dates throughout ‘09. If that’s not enough, Touch and Go Records are putting together four snazzy reissues of the band’s “sprawling” discography for release this May. But
wait? You don’t know who The Jesus Lizard are/were?
This Chicago quartet led a brutal undergound scene of noise rock, and in some respects is seen as highly influential by today’s standards. While they never hit mainstream success, even by the likes of Dinosaur Jr. standards, they still managed to attain a cult like status, though mostly through its oddball sound or whacko stage hijinx (think G.G. Allin lite). In fact, one of the band’s claim to fame was sharing some disc space with Nirvana on 1993’s UK single, “Puss/Oh, The Guilt”. Keeping in mind they debuted in Chicago, next year’s touring plans make all the more sense now…
The original lineup of David Yow, Duane Denison, David Wm. Sims and Mac McNeilly will reform for a very limited series of live dates in 2009, starting with the All Tomorrow’s Parties event dubbed The Fans Strike Back in Minehead, UK on May 9 and 10 and ending with a final appearance in Chicago in late November. These shows will be the Jesus Lizard’s first since disbanding in 1999 and the first in twelve years to feature the original storied quartet.
However, if anyone needs a kick in the head, Touch and Go has plenty of nice words to say for them, as they write, “To put it bluntly (or perhaps merely state the obvious), The Jesus Lizard were the greatest live band of the last decade of the 20th century. Mr. David Yow will forever be the frontman to end all other frontmen. The Chicago live music scene may never be the same again and for that, we are eternally grateful.”
Okay, I’m sold. Now, where are those reissues?
