Weezer’s big plans for 2009

Weezer’s big plans for 2009

It’s a little early for marking up the 2009 calendars just yet, but Rivers Cuomo seems to think otherwise. Weezer’s nerdy frontman has some big ideas for his band next year, and with any “big idea” it takes some planning. So, if he’s pulling off the plastic wrapping on his Peanuts calendar, let’s not bark at him, okay? Especially since this has to do with old archival material, not just on his end, but from the band’s vaults.

Hot off the release of Alone II: The Home Recordings, Cuomo spat off a couple of ideas to Billboard, some of which includes a release similar to his home recordings, but with the band’s material. Also, if you missed Weezer’s tour this past fall, it looks like you’ll be able to catch ‘em in ‘09, too.

Cuomo tells Billboard he has “no idea” when the tentatively titled “Odds and Ends” will be released, but describes it as “just another fun project to do. They’re great songs, but for some reason they didn’t make the final cut for [a] record. They span a vast period of time from the very beginning of our career in the early ’90s right up to the present day.”

Meanwhile, Cuomo says Weezer may tour next spring with Oasis, and is hoping to enlist Spike Jonze to direct a video for the song “The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived” from its recent “The Red Album.”

It’s a lot to take in. Spike Jonze? The man responsible for the band’s infamous “Buddy Holly” video? And he’s going to direct what is probably one of Weezer’s “biggest” songs? Wild…just wild. Oh, and does anyone find it odd that Oasis continues to tour with acts that are arguably better than them? Just an observation, do what you will with it.

That’s not all. If The Red Album isn’t up to your liking, then perhaps the six songs the band recently recorded for the iPhone game, “Tap Tap Revenge”, will suit you better. Oh, and then there’s talk of a Cuomo collaboration with those youngsters Aly & AJ. That should be humorous at the very least.

Oh well. It looks like 2009 won’t be too shabby.

  1. dude weezer is so much better than oasis it isn’t even funny. I went to both an oasis show and a weezer show last year and the oasis one was okay, but the weezer won had a lot more energy and was a lot more engaging. while their music in the public eyes may be equal, (i think weezer music is better but that’s just me) weezer owns at their concerts.

  2. First Weezer is not better than Oasis. Second this would be a great tour, I am a fan of both bands and would very much enjoy this show. So to both bands make sure you come to Detroit (Pine Knob) the ideal venue. Both bands are great at what they do, I have had many memories with both. Mad 4 Oasis and Love Weezer.
    MAKE IT HAPPEN GUYS!

While we are at it GO WINGS!!!

  3. Weezer are on par with Oasis and vice versa. That should br s ghreat tour if it happens and hopefully they will do at least one show in the NY/NJ area! Noel Gallagher and Rivers Cuomo are both masters at the art of nicking an old melody or riff and turning into something brilliant and new.
I love both bands dearly and own all of their collective albums and bsides, and I would not rate Weezer over Oasis. They are equals at the very least. Both bands made 2 consecutive masterpieces in the Nineties (the Blue Album, Pinkerton and Definitely Maybe and Whats The Story Morning Glory). And likewise they are both now essentially very good at making singles and not entirely good albums. Also, Oasis’ upcoming show at Madison Sq Garden is a sell out; I was at Weezer’s Madison Square Garden show a few months back and it was great, but not a sellout. So I wouldnt say Weezer is necessarily better than Oasis.

  4. wow, opening for Oasis. Weezer knows who to go on tour with (even if this is just specualtion). when i saw the =W=, they were on tour with the Foo Fighters and Kaiser Chiefs…that was a kickass show.

also, unreleased early 90’s Weezer material? sign me up!!!!

  5. AWESOME.
