Stephen Colbert declares war…on Kanye West

As previously reported, on the 25th of November Stephen Colbert indeed released a Christmas album, appropriately titled A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!. The release went as planned, and surprisingly has since made its way to iTunes’ top 20 albums (currently at 15).

For most satirical fake news anchors who make their musical debut, this spot would suffice, but not for the Colbert Report star. In fact, for the D.C. native, not only is #15 not enough, it’s a bit upsetting. But as he revealed during yesterday’s program, only one man truly stands in his way of reigning supreme.

Who, might you ask? Kanye West, of course. While Colbert sits back at spot 15, behind the likes of Nickelback, the Twilight soundtrack, and Taylor Swift, Kanye’s fine 808s & Heartbreak currently holds down #1 (or at least it did at the time of Colbert’s rant, at this point maybe he should give Ms. Spears a talking to). To make matters worse, the Chicago rapper’s earlier effort, The College Dropout also sits content atop the charts (currently at #10) thanks to a nice iTunes discount.

It is common knowledge that both Mr. West and Stephen Colbert are egomaniacs (albeit Colbert’s egomania is feigned), and thus in accordance with his reputation the newscaster has announced “Operation Humble Kanye.”

After complaining about this unfortunate turn of events and equating Kanye to Crocs, Colbert unveiled his plan. In a plot to overtake West’s #1 spot (and possibly promote both albums and iTunes simultaneously), Colbert has ordered everyone in the “Colbert Nation” to purchase his Christmas EP via iTunes today, December 3rd at exactly 5 p.m. Eastern, “Effectively toppling both Kanye’s ego and album by putting Stephen where he belongs…at #1 on iTunes, making him ‘the voice of this generation of this decade…’”

Oh, Stephen Colbert, with your deliberate over-the-top antics. Surprisingly, however, it was Kanye, not Colbert who came up with that “humble” label for himself. God love the both of them.

Check it out from the Colberster himself…

  1. Well, he beat Kanye, but Stephen is still number 3 on iTunes. He’s behind Britney and Akon! Really?
