Neil Young plans long-awaited box set, other surprises
As our immediate neighbors to the north, Canada has always found strong ways to remain consistently relevant in the music world thanks to musicians like Mr. Neil Young. After all, Toronto’s very own Godfather of Grunge, consistently finds himself at the top of Canada’s finest musical exports by notching another set of strikes in his long, industrious career. The latest of these to come across the wire, you ask?
Well, first off comes Young recent announcement regarding the release of his long-awaited box set, The Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972, which is set for early 2009. The box set will reportedly feature hours of unreleased material as well as a recording of the song “Aurora” by his old high school band The Squires:
According to a newly-released trailer, the box set, on 10-disc DVD or Blu-Ray, will contain 128 audio tracks, including 43 unreleased and 13 of these never heard before.
The set, which comes with a 236-page hardback book, will also feature access to thousands of images and hours of video.
- Uncut
As if that wasn’t enough, Young also has divulged details to Rolling Stone concerning the new
est album with his long-standing backing band Crazy Horse called Toast, his first album with them since 2003’s Greendale:
What’s the status of your next album, Toast?
Toast is done. It’s amazing listening experience. It was recorded in 5.1. It’s a mind blowing record, and I don’t think it’s a commercial record, but it’s great rock and roll, very moody, kind of jazzy. It was recorded in the same place where Coltrane was recorded, so there’s a lot of heavy stuff in there. All of the live ambiance for everything was all recorded, so the whole thing has got a massive sound about it. I want to have a premier of it that’s in a large art gallery with speakers in all four corners of the room, and huge speakers and really spend some time on the acoustics of the room, so you could have two or three hundred people in there that are in the middle of the sweet spot listening to this thing all around. So you came to a real listening experience that you wouldn’t be able to get in any other location than right there.
Add in the possible cherry on top - if those heavily circulated rumors of a Coachella headlining appearance in 2009 are indeed true - and Young fans should be in for one hell of a 2009. If it truly is better to burn out than to fade away, Young hasn’t shown signs of any of it and for the sixty-three year old rocker, life never gets old and he still finds ways to keep on rockin’ in the free world.
Oh and for the meantime, you can check out a streaming of his most recent offering Sugar Mountain Live At Canterbury House, 1968.
