Satch accuses Coldplay of plagiarism

What a week it has been in the newsroom, and it’s not even Christmas yet! To make things even crazier for today, Reuters and Blabbermouth both report that guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani is accusing Coldplay of plagiarism. The claim is that Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” is a direct ripoff of one of his compositions, “If I Could Fly”.

Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.

Satriani’s copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song “Viva La Vida” incorporates “substantial original portions” of his 2004 instrumental “If I Could Fly.”

The 52-year-old guitar virtuoso is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits” attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

Well, it looks like a breakup for the band is the least thing to worry about. To imagine the two distinctively different bands in the same sentence is completely, if not utterly random, but it’s happened here before. For the meantime, check out this video of both songs played back to back and decide for yourself.

  1. rip off!!!!!!
sucks cause I used to kind of like that band

  2. Certainly looks like a direct lift but I’m guessing a coincidence, as few people know of (or listen to) Satriani in England.

Those that do are self indulgent axe worshippers that can’t be taken seriously anyway.

Chris M, pay the man and move on.

  3. was this not news in june when the album came out, but with some shitty band from NYC that had no motive at all but to gain publicity for themselves?

this one actually looks/sounds legit though.

now i’m sad because “Viva la Vida” (the album) kind of sucked, but “Prospeckt’s March - EP” is pretty awesome. now we get this plagiarism…

looks like Chris Martin’s got some ’splainin to do…

  4. Just another reason why Coldplay sucks. Oopps, did I just say that?

  5. Definitely a rip off. They should just combine melodies and call it a day. That sounded pretty sweet

  7. This is even better than the Nickleback fiasco (when they took the music of an older single, put new lyrics to it, then released it as a new single for a new album.)

  8. [...] Schnauss’ compositions came out during the early 2000’s. Could this get as big as the Coldplay/Joe Satriani battle? Who knows at this point. It’s not like the similarities are screaming at us, [...]
