Come 2009, there will be one less group floating around the strange, but forever vibrant Brooklyn music scene. Dirty on Purpose have announced that effective January 1, 2009, the four-piece, shoegaze-friendly outfit will be no more, ending a six year existence highlighted by one full-length album, 2006’s Hallelujah Sirens, three EPs, and a slew of tour dates with some of music’s biggest names.
We got back from tour about a month ago and sat down to talk about recording another record, and realized we didn’t really want to record another record. Not now anyway. So we’re going our separate ways.
But before they go the way of the dodo bird, the gentlemen of Dirty on Purpose will look to finish with a special New Years Eve performance with fellow Brooklynites and longtime friends A Place to Bury Strangers at New York’s Mercury Lounge. Tickets for the show are currently available via ticketmaster.com, but you better hurry, this particular New Years shindig is expected to sellout.
As mentioned, Dirty on Purpose experienced a number of notable achievements during its six year existience. In addition to its critically acclaimed discography, the group composed of Doug Marvin, Joseph Jurewicz, George Wilson, and DJ Boudreau performed with the likes of Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, and Band of Horses among others and appeared at a number of music festivals, including South By Southwest, Street Scene, and Pop Montreal. With that kind of resume, a Dirty on Purpose reunion sometime down the road would certainly be welcomed, a fact the group already seems well aware of:
Finally, we’re all still buddies and live in the same town, so we reserve the right to change our minds and get back together in six months if we feel like it.
