Andy Samberg’s next Lonely Island project…

Everyone knows who Andy Samberg is, right? You know, the only really funny cast member left on Saturday Night Live. Oh, don’t watch the show? Surely you’ve seen him in the SNL Digital Short, “Lazy Sunday”, the Chronicles of Narnia rap that became popular overnight, thanks to the world wide web. Well anyways, he’s making an album.

Samberg, along with SNL writers Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, is leader of the comedic trio called The Lonely Island, which has produced all of the SNL Digital Shorts in addition to 2007’s box office flop, Hot Rod. Currently, the three are prepping their initial debut, Incredibad, due out February 10th on Universal Republic Records, and while some might scoff at the idea of a record filled with skits (e.g. “Dick in a Box” anyone?), the guest list is pretty impressive. Everyone from Jack Black to Julian Casablancas, Norah Jones to T-Pain are all on board with the laugh riots. So, what’s the idea behind all this?

“It’ll be the first time people get to hear everything without the audience laughter over it,” says Taccone. “We spend so much time getting stuff to sound good, and then it gets on the show, and we’re glad that it sounds good in the [live studio] audience, but nobody has ever really heard a clean version of those songs.”

Okay, we can buy a studio album. Hell, Rodney Dangerfield had one! But, a tour? Apparently Taccone’s sights are further than the studio: “I would love for us to be able to tour, too. I just can’t imagine when the hell we’d ever have time!” Until they do, don’t go running to the clubs just yet. With the album due out just before Valentine’s Day (how perfect), the three writers have a lot of time to prep more ideas. Though to be honest, some new digital shorts seem more likely than a tour.

God knows SNL needs ‘em.
