Stephen Malkmus looks ahead to 2009…and 2010

Stephen Malkmus looks ahead to 2009…and 2010

Few men can get us excited about something that’s two years away, but Stephen Malkmus did just that in a recent interview with Spin. Speaking of his upcoming plans, the former Pavement frontman turned solo artist extraordinaire/leader of the Jicks revealed that he and his outfit will head into the studio in June of next year to begin the followup to this year’s Real Emotional Trash. If all goes as plan, the currently untitled effort will be ready to hit eardrums by…ready? February of 2010!

Alright, so its a long ways away, but considering Malkmus’ comments related to the direction and style of the new album, it certainly appears it will be well worth the wait:

“There are some catchy upbeat ones influenced by playing live. And then there are some [that use] time signature changes on classic rock forms — things that people wouldn’t have bothered to do back then, but you have to now because you don’t want to sound like some retro band….There’s one song that sounds like the Cribs, which is a band from England. And there’s a waltz — there’s always a waltz.”

Of course, there’s a waltz!

Of the new material, Malkmus & the Jicks have previously debuted a few selections, including a track entitled “Astral Face” which he offered at last summer’s Siren Music Festival.

Ok, now on to the topic we know you’re thinking because well, we’re thinking it too. What will Mr. Malkmus doing between now and June of 2009? While the California native went on to shoot down possibilites of a Pavement reunion, “Pavement was a really hardworking band through the ’90s, so it wouldn’t be surprising if we wanted to revisit that,” Malmus says. “The option’s open. But the Jicks are so good that there’s not a reason to go back right now,” let’s just say, I think it’d be safe to keep that Coachella reunion afloat…
