Benjy Ferree pays tribute to Peter Pan
Now here’s something you don’t see everyday: an album dedicated to Peter Pan. But on February 3rd, Benjy Ferree will release just that with Come Back To The Five and Dime, Bobby Dee Bobby Dee, the Washington D.C. based singer/songwriter’s sophomore studio album, on Domino Records.
Described as a “musical eulogy to a forgotten child star who was chewed up and spit out by the unforgiving Hollywood meat market” - in 1953, Bobby Driscoll, the child star who played in Disney’s 1953 version of Peter Pan was fired for hitting puberty, and consequently would struggle to find work or success during the latter half of his life - the 14-track effort is a reflection of Ferree’s childhood fascination with the film and his subsequent discovery of Driscoll’s plight.
The musical tribute offers another batch of the rootsy, blues influenced rock ‘n roll that Ferree first introduced to the world with the release of his debut album, Leaving the Nest, in 2006:
Drawing as much from the country meandering of Jimmie Rodgers and the passionate blues pounding of Son House as he does from the vocal hysterics of Freddie Mercury and the balladry of Nick Cave, Ferree crafts a sound that is difficult to fit into any one category, but upon listening is as gratifying as it is unique.
In support of the release, Ferree will hit the road in February with CoS’ favorite Tim Fite for a two-week North American stint.
