Lady Sovereign readies a Jigsaw
What do you call an album that tells the roller coaster story a 22-year-old British based rapper’s two year music career with “genre-defying beats,” “punchy, zest-fresh lyrics,” and some Kanye West approved auto tunes? Well, Lady Sovereign thinks Jigsaw is a good name and has named her forthcoming sophomre studio album just that.
Scheduled for release on April 7th on her personal imprint Midget Records, in conjunction with EMI, the followup to 2006’s critically acclaimed Public Warning marks the next chapter in the U.K. rapper’s unique collection of musical stylings. As was the case on her debut effort, Lady Sovereign will look to combine an assortment of sounds and genres on Jigsaw - this time around, she even sings! - in hopes of telling the story of the last two years of her life:
“Like my first album, it’s not consistent but it works for me. There are genres on there that ain’t even genres, I’m unpredictable when it comes to making music, I don’t do one genre! I’ve got a few classic club tracks on there but also songs that show another side, a more developed style of songwriting. It’s another chapter to my life. A few of the tracks explain everything that’s happened in the last two years, which I didn’t get a chance to at the time. I’ve been listening to a lot of electro, a lot of instrumental music. Working with (long-time producer) Medasyn is an inspiration because we always come up with some weird beats together.”
Ahead of the release, Sovereign has unveiled an early Christmas gift of sorts in the form of a mp3 and video of the synth-heavy track off her upcoming album, entitled “I Got You Dancing”.
