Ridiculously Awesome Music Videos: NIN vs Star Trek - “Closer”
We’re still five months away from the new Star Trek movie and already the fan videos are heating up.
Homosexual tension and Star Trek aren’t exactly strangers (Mr. Sulu, anyone?) - but the particular video below is the definitive work on how Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk really wanted to boldy go where two men had never gone before on network television.
Mashing up the nastiest song of 1996 and the nerdiest show of 1969, video editors “Killa” and “T. Jonesy” have woven a tapestry of unrequited space lust. “Star Trek+Nine Inch Nails=Closer” takes meticulously chosen footage from the original Star Trek series, retouches it to match the gritty Super-8 look of the original “Closer” video, and then synchs up the ripest moments of Star Trek history (including a few unprecedentedly intimate Vulcan mind-melds and a shot of a bare chested William Shatner chained to a wall) to head Nail Trent Reznor’s goth-disco beats.
While this video’s concept isn’t exactly the most original, it demonstrates phenomenal editing skills (Spock’s face at 1:20) and a highly developed sense of context (Kirk at 0:59 with the start of the chorus); by these reasons, it must be considered Ridiculously Awesome, and thus required viewing.

Closer was recorded in 1994. And did you seriously just call Nine Inch Nails “goth-disco”. You are lame.
“a tapestry of unrequited space lust” - best line ever. Cheers to both Killa and T. Jonesy for making something so beautifully hilarious.
