Coachella ‘09: What’s the deal?

Coachella ‘09: What’s the deal?

With new rumors pouring in by the day and message boarders currently basking in all sorts of fun, hot air balloon-friendly colors, it certainly appears as if the lineup announcement for Coachella 2009 is quickly approaching, if not imminent. In fact, if you believe Monklish, a Coachella focused blog that has gained quite a bit attention of late for its extensive list of “guarantees,” “probables,” and “perhaps(es),” this year’s bill will officially be dished out on Monday, January 26th. With all that being said, perhaps it would be a good time to get everyone up to speed with a recap of what we do know.

As of today, we currently have 20 acts listed as confirmed on our Coachella Outlook page. The Killers highlight the list, while Franz Ferdinand, The Hold Steady, Fleet Foxes, The Airborne Toxic Event, and Lupe Fiasco make up the biggest names. Others set to descend on Indio include The Bug, Buraka Som Sistema, Crystal Castles, Drop The Lime, Flying Lotus, Girl Talk, No Age, Noah and the Whale, Late of the Pier, Los Campesinos!, Peanut Butter Wolf, The Presets, Sebastian Tellier, Themselves, and Tinariwen.

As for rumors, there are plenty. Neil Young, Green Day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and OutKast have been floated as possible headliners. So has Morrissey, who appears a lock to appear at Coachella in some form or another, as well as Pavement, though it’s unclear if promoters will pay the band’s supposedly high asking price. We also added Nine Inch Nails to the rumor mill today, seeing as that Trent Reznor and Co. are rumored to be touring the U.S. again beginning in April.

The list of rumored mid-tier bands is also impressive, highlighted by Band of Horses, Basement Jaxx, Lily Allen, N.A.S.A., Brian Jonestown Massacre, Bloc Party, The Pretenders, and We Are Scientists. On the indie front, White Lies, The Ting Tings, The Thermals, Mastodon, Monotonix, Glasvegas, Crystal Antlers, The Black Keys, and The Gaslight Anthem look to be possible acts.

Of course, all will be known sooner rather than later, a good thing considering a few of the more diehard Coachella-goers are getting a bit antsy. In the meantime, be sure to keep checking our Coachella Outlook page for all the latest scuttle.
