Spinal Tap goes “Unwigged & Unplugged”

A new Spinal Tap album and tour…what it is it, 1984?

Some 17 years after the release of the semi-fictional outfit’s second studio album, Break Like the Wind, actors musicians Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer will resurrect Spinal Tap for another go around. As we first told you last month, the metal heads are currently putting the finishing touches on yet-to-be-titled new studio, which as we learned today, will be supported by a North American tour. Yes, beginning next month, the trio will embark on the 30-date “Unwigged & Unplugged,” or in more layman’s terms, an out-of-character, all acoustic tour. Per Rolling Stone:

“We’re doing the trio tour because it’s so easy,” McKean says from stage. “We just have these wooden instruments and we don’t have to wear these things on our heads, unless we’re playing a temple —?

Adds Shearer, “Or a mosque.”

Of course, that’s not to say  David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls won’t be making an appearance anytime soon. Rolling Stone goes on to note that the band “[plans] on some special live appearances later this year as Spinal Tap in full, wigged regalia, the first since their epic appearance at 2007’s Live Earth in London.”

Speaking of which…

  • Please forgive my spelling errors like musicians, denominator, mandolin & comedian. Probably won’t be getting a newspaper writing job anytime soon. Maybe you’ll find other spelling errors. My proof reading needs improvement as well.

  • I saw the show 4/19/09 at the Keller in Portland Oregon. They had the people laughing out loud. They were better muscians than I had imagined. Their vocals & harmonies were pretty spot on. Harry Shearer alternated between electric & upright bass & his bass lines were pretty good. Michael Mckean’s guitar & keyboard playing was very passible & it’s hard to know if the clams Christopher Guest was hitting were on purpose or not. His mandoline playing was musical but not phenominal. The humor they & the crowd enjoys caters to a lower common denomintor not too much different than many comediens. They showed old clips of them in the early eighties doing what Spinal Tap does & it remains hilarious. The Mighty Wind material was equally funny & maybe musically better. For me, they were a guilty pleasure.

  • No wigs? No costumes? Acoustic instruments? It’s not Spinal Tap it’s the freaking FOLKSMEN!

    Awesome!

If the tour is really and truly a Spinal Tap tour, I hope that the “Folksmen” will at least open for them like they used to. Mighty Wind folks my world in two.

  • I wonder if they will have a different drummer for each show.
