Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Jane’s Addiction head Lollapalooza ‘09

Update: You can now add Kings of Leon to the list (headliner #4). Looks like Peter Bjorn & John are a lock as well…

Surprise, surprise! The Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot is at it again. After providing an early look at Pitchfork’s 2009 lineup earlier this morning, Mr. Kot has moved on to his next victim: the headliners for this year’s Lollapalooza. Yes folks, if you believe Kot’s recently posted blog entry - and you should, considering the man also leaked Lolla’s headliners in 2008 - we know now who will be hitting the mainstage come August 7-9 in Chicago’s Grant Park.

According to Kot, the Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, and the recently reunited Jane’s Addiction are three of six “arena level headliners” currently scheduled to perform at this year’s Lollapalooza. Of these three leaks, only the Beastie Boys comes as a real surprise; both Depeche Mode and Jane’s Addiction had been independently confirmed on our Lollapalooza outlook page for weeks.

As for the other three headliners, which are expected to be included when the complete lineup is announced next month, rumors are a plenty. Based solely on speculation resulting from hearsay, touring schedules, and whatever information one would qualify as resulting in rumors, The Killers, Tool, and Kings of Leon look to be strong possibilities, while Green Day and Blink-182 could be considered as well.

What we do know for sure is that the Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, and Jane’s Addiction join a constantly growing list of confirmations on our Lollapalooza outlook page. Other acts which look to be locks for this year’s lineup include Atmosphere, Ben Folds, Delta Spirit, Friedly Fires, Kaiser Chiefs, and The Ravonettes.

As always, we’ll keep you updated…

  1. I would like to know how much the 3 days tickets will be anyone?

  2. The Killers and Kings of Leon are not headline potential

Don’t get me wrong kings of leon are one of my top 5 bands but they can’t put on an arena headline show . And the killers havnt made a good album since hot fuss I would put both late in the day. Lolla needs power I would say tool and Death cab for cutie are other headlines and beastie boys or tool go unoposed

  3. it’s funny, right after i asked you they sent out a mass email saying it was this week.

  4. !!!, I assume there will be. Not sure when though.

  5. hey alex! since you get all the good leaks, do you know if and when lollapalooza will sell three day passes for super cheap again?

  6. I am a great speller.

  7. I am disappoint in the headliners so far but im guessing this year is going to have much better mid level acts than last year

  8. as much as i hate KOL…they are selling out arenas.

  9. this is all well and good but who would be the unopposed??
My selfish dream scenario given what is already in place and realistic given rumors…
    DM Unopposed
Tool vs The Killers so I can see Tool
Beasties vs Jane’s so I can see BB
    KOL in the Racs Spot
I think people may be surprised but I think DM may be given the unopposed spot even over Jane’s…they won’t give it to Tool I don’t think and BB won’t 4th at the roo and 1 at Lolla…

  10. so if you died, u would be ok with the rest of the people in ur house to just go off somewhere and quit what they were doing? at the massive request of everyone else?

  11. im a little sad… not gonna lie. blink 182? really?

  12. Sure I would think that Brad would want Sublime to go on if he hadn’t been dead.

  13. reunite, in nevada

  14. lol, i dont know what people have against the rest of sublime, so many bands are still around with the founder deceased. wouldnt you think that brad would want sublime to continue to shine and pass his message?

  15. Did what?

  16. Hey dude…. they did.

  17. Good news I’ve ever heard, even better than those idiotic Sublime reunion rumors.

  18. Come on Dan, don’t let the headliners ruin watching music by the lake with the most beautiful city in the world as it’s back drop. Just leave early and go to see some killer aftershows!

  19. This lineup sucks so hard. Rothbury here I come!

  20. yea janes will be unopposed, which makes kings of leon seem so much more likely cuz theyre the sorta-arena band around now… technically they can play arenas (we’ll wait to see if they can actually fill them)

  21. Yeah.. arena headliner is a pretty loose term these days

  22. Wow, talk about a throwback to the 90s…is Jane’s really big enough to headline? Will they play unopposed? I’m assuming they won’t because the report said there are 3 more arena-sized headliners yet to be announced.

I’m betting on Tool, Kings of Leon and The Killers

  23. not enough to interest me yet. But if TOOL signs, i’ll be there.

  24. I’ll say this. I never doubted the guy, I just like to have more than one source of info, especially when its something as big as this. That being said, I think the man is earning some much deserved respect.

  25. So Johnny J is…. right!
