Watch: Public Enemy & The Roots take over Jimmy Fallon

Watch: Public Enemy & The Roots take over Jimmy Fallon

For all those who doubted that Jimmy Fallon would not be able to fill Conan O’Brien’s shoes whatsoever…well, you’re dead wrong. For the Brooklyn native, SNL alum and current Late Night prince, Fallon has certainly shed his “first week blues” and established his own spin on the typical late night talk show. Last night, along with his excellent house band, Philadelphia’s The Roots, the skittish host invited up to the stage none other than Roosevelt, Long Island rap legends Public Enemy, who were the night’s musical guest. With an incredible and amped up version of the group’s anthemic “Bring The Noise”, Public Enemy put on one helluva performance last night.

While Fallon has now entered into his third week of hosting Late Night, Public Enemy’s performance by far cemented the comedian’s new position. Everything clicked. Chuck D ran the show, Flavor Flav never sounded better (hey, it was his fiftieth birthday!), and it was great to see Professor Griff on board. Words do not describe these guys, and why should they? Just watch for yourself.

Keep it up, Jimmy!

  1. bobbyrisigliano, what exactly does “growing up” have to do with knowing what is or isn’t funny? Of course, everyone knows that success has to do with who you know and not what you know, but I do not believe that was balls and anonymous’ point. Their point was simple: he isn’t funny and doesn’t make a good host. Yes, we do need to give him some time to see if he can improve, but it does not mean they don’t have a point, at least for now.

    Interesting blog, by the way.

  2. Fallon is horrible, but I can’t stop watching the trainwreck.

  3. he does look like Eric Stoltz but also kinda looks like Josh Homme’s geeky twin brother.
Apparently Kilborn was in Benchwarmers with Rob Schneider and David Spade?

  4. One question WTF happend to Craig Kilborne? I mean, i know he left the Late Show volutarily but that guy just dropped of the face of the earth?>>>

This is one man that just disappears and reappears all the time without notice. Remember his cameo in 2003’s Old School? He looked like he had lukemia or something, too. Then he started hosting again and now he’s gone.

Does anyone else think Kilborne looks vaguely Eric Stoltz-like?

  5. Glad to entertain, Zatz.

  6. “his schtick is funny. If you watch Conan’s first three years, they were awkward and pretty unfunny”

    lol

  7. This show is definitly better than Conan was in his first 2/3 years. But production value of late nite show has vastly improved since then overall, don’tcha think?
As for Fallon’s musical angle of the show, I think its spot on. Monday night i believe had Gary Sinese(sp?) on Bass jammin with the Roots, While Fallon danced and clapped on the side. Akward…. yes. Classic… for sure.
Roffmann i think you mis-interpreted my posts thinking that i was siding with those two intellectually stunted music fans (balls and anonymous). I simply stated that: “I somewhat agree with “balls” & “anonymous” point of getting good acts, does not automatically make you a good host”
at no point did i say Fallon was a bad host, i did however say: “And said point above does not mean i enjoy Fallon” but then really went on to rant about his SNL days and how much i loathed them. I quite enjoy his take on the late night game, he’ll only get better.
And as for Jay’s article(s) i most often seek them out 1st as he was one of the originals!

  8. All he’s saying is that the show is improving, and Fallon is too. I agree. If you’ve been watching lately, he’s been getting very comfortable and his schtick is funny. If you watch Conan’s first three years, they were awkward and pretty unfunny. I’d almost say Fallon has trimmed all the awkwardness and he’s now finding the right niche for his humor.

In today’s standards, it’s pathetic we need everything to work and click immediately. Monday night’s show, you know where PE performed, was an example of Fallon & co going in the right direction.

Disagree or not, that’s how I see it…and I think Jay would agree.

  9. And said point above does not mean i enjoy Fallon. In fact i am under the belief that Fallon stayed on SNL just cause he was a half decent writer. Cause basically he rode Sanz and Ferrell’s coatails the whole time he was there. Just sitting in on skits laughing. (Two classic examples, both on Ferrell’s best of SNL DVD: The Welshley Arms skit with Drew Berrymore and the “Old Prospector skit” in the extras section) I do believe however he was chosen because of his writing skills, so an easy transition could be made and he could have lots of say in that process.
Hence why Carson Daly didn’t get chosen. He’s like a glorified Weather Person.

  10. I somewhat agree with “balls” & “anonymous” point of getting good acts, does not automatically make you a good host. Even though i totally cannot take “anonymous’” point into consideration, due to the fact he doesn’t have half the wit to leave a handle (besides the point, i know.)
The problem with their argument, (and those two should maybe do a little growing up) is that its time to live in the real world and realize its not “what you know” (ie. - How to host a Talk show) its who you know (ie.- PE feat. the Roots). This ideaology works in all facets of life.
balls and anonymous get a clue?

  11. Balls said it perfectly. Just because he can pick a musical guest doesn’t make him a good host. He may have shed the jitters but he still isn’t funny and is a poor host. You guys don’t have to like everything.

  12. Jimmy Fallon doesn’t do much for me. Then again, I hate the late night format and don’t watch it regularly. But there is nothing wrong with a show that gets The Roots and Public Enemy on stage together. Turn it up! Yeahhhhhhh Boyyyyyyyyyyy.

    mm

  13. Fallon has certainly shed his “first week blues” and established his own spin on the typical late night talk show.>>>

I believe Mr. Ziegler implied that he moved past the awkwardness and he also happened to book a great musical guest…in other words, it’s becoming a good show to watch.

Your comment’s just fast paced cynicism. Coming from a cynic like myself, I’d suggest you slow down and read. Otherwise, you might be unreadable.

  14. So, Jimmy Fallon is a good host b/c Public Enemy played on his show? Your logic defies me. Also, Fallon is unwatchable.

  15. Very Cool. Wonder if they might join PE at Coachella as a surprise guest???
