Tool, The Killers confirmed as final two headliners of Lolla ‘09

In news that probably shouldn’t surprise anyone, Tool and The Killers are reportedly the final two headliners of Lollapalooza 2009, joining the previously leaked Jane’s Addiction, Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, and Kings of Leon. Of course, nothing is official, but according to Mr. Leaky Faucet himself, aka The Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot, “multiple industry sources confirmed” the much speculated rumors during last week’s South by Southwest.

Kot also goes on to note that The Decemebists and Lou Reed will also be included on this year’s bill, the latter of which jives with what Jim DeRogatis of The Chicago Sun-Times reported over the weekend, who also stated that Andrew Bird and Neko Case appear to be locks as well.

So what’s festival curator/frontman extraordinaire Perry Farrell have to say about all this? During a sit down with MTV over the weekend, the Jane’s Addiction head confirmed the headliners (at that point, only four had been leaked), but with a friendly reminder: “Lollapalooza now has six headliners, so there’s two they don’t now about. [Plus,] even the people who are playing before us are awesome, so no, I’m not too mad about it.” Oh yeah, and then there is this part:

“We have a lineup in the electronic world that’s a who’s who of electronic artists, and they don’t know anything about that, either,” Farrell added. “I kind of feel like Octomom, you know? Getting all this attention. Who cares?”

In other words, despite the fact that we apparently know 18 of the acts set to appear at this year’s Lollapalooza, we still have a long ways to go. Oh, and in case you were wondering on said acts:

Andrew Bird, Atmosphere, Beastie Boys, Ben Folds, The Decemberists, Delta Spirit, Depeche Mode, Friendly Fires, Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Jane’s Addiction, Lou Reed, The Ravonettes, Paul Green’s School of Rock All-Stars, Neko Case, TheNewNo2, Tool

P.S. Major props to Johnny J…

  1. uhhhhh DAN… you said quality is your problem, if TOOL doesn’t bring quality to the show in your mind, you truly reveal a closed mind, think outside the box. TOOL not quality…are you F-in kidding me, thats like saying Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd suck too. LOL, TOOL stole the show at Bonnaroo in 05, and this appearance will go down in history. Just like Jimi Hedrix live at Woodstock was Legendary; TOOL at Lollapalooza will be as well. And if you think TOOL is Metal, then you clearly know nothing at all. Keep your Third Eye Open.

  2. Well I guess it all goes with music taste and preference. It’s a shift to continue looking at the quality of music rather than the ‘name’ as there are so many good artists out there without the big name and recognition. Personally, I’d prefer quality over quanity any day. And I’m totally stoked for this years line-up! Not to mention my hometown boys (and girl) with Atmosphere :-)

  3. tickets do not cost 250$

  4. My problem isn’t with the popularity of the headliners, its with their quality. I could care less about The Killers, Depeche Mode, Tool, Kings of Leon and Jane’s Addiciton. And I like the Beasties fine and good, but they aren’t exactly a big draw at this stage in their careers.

  5. I dont agree that this years headliners are smaller than last years…granted that RATM is HUGE and that they are F*@&KING UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! and Radiohead is enormous, but Tool is massive as well! This is the first confirmed show of their summer tour 2009, the first show since their hiatus started at the end of 2007 with two nights at the Pearl in Vegas!

Depeche Mode is also massive, as are Beastie Boys, JA, KOL, and the killers (even thought the blow big time!)

  6. Tool will get me to Lolla.

  7. I would agree with the “zomg screw the headliners its all about the other bands!” sentiment if tickets didnt cost $250. but since they do, being 0-for-6 in the headliner stat makes lolla’s value drop to the “are you fucking kidding me, thats a horrible value” column.

  8. Alex, thanks for the shout out. That was very nice of you…

    Keep up the good work.

  9. I agree with Mike!

  10. If your pumped for Tool– that’s sad. Sorry, I dont want to hear rehashed versions of Schism over and over again… I’ll pass.

  11. I’m pretty stoked for Tool, they should be headlining at least one of the nights I hope.

  12. I love the people that get all pissy over the headliners. Sure, they aren’t as strong as last year( how could you top that?), but C3 still managed to get two exclusive acts. Lolla will be Depeche Mode’s only midwestern stop on their Tour of the Universe, and there’s a good chance this will be Tool’s only show all year. Both will put on excellent shows, as well. As far as I’m concerned, this festival will be all about the mid/low tier acts, which I think are going to be great across the board. The headliners are just a bonus.

  13. i totally agree with mike…. thats exactly how this year is going to play out and it will be freaking awesome

  14. I’m glad the headliners are all smaller than last year. That means they have more money to spread around among the full lineup which will be badass!

  15. So its confirmed that Lollapalooza 2009 has a really really terrible lineup. Cool.

  16. Pilfered more content I see.

  17. Johnny J shoots…. swishhhh!

  18. the killers? are you kidding me? thats really disappointing. i guess this year the smaller acts will steal the show.
