Festivals in Brief: The California Edition
Update: On second thought, rumors are just rumors, not confirmations, so we’ve added the five names to the Coachella Outlook page…
California has a lot of music festivals. Three of these festivals have a lot of news to discuss. So, let’s round up all the important info in today’s edition of CoS’ Festivals in Brief:
Coachella Music Festival:
There’s been a lot of Coachella related scuttle of late, mostly the result of some wishful fans looking for a Saturday headliner a bit more appealing than The Killers. While the Indio, California based festival has yet to fulfill this fantasy, it did make a significant announcement last night, this being in the form of the lineup for this year’s Dome. As expected, the dance-friendly area will be making a return this year and will offer attendees four nights of late night/early morning sounds. Flying Lotus, Felix Cartal, LA Riots, Daedelus, and Peanut Butter Wolf make highlight the bill, while a Friendly Fires DJ set, Kim (of The Presets), Busy P, and Kill The Noise make up other acts of note.
Getting back to those “rumors,” perhaps now would be an appropriate time to address the comments I made earlier this week on CoS’ Twitter. You know, the ones that said: “Wow. If the rumors are true, Coachella has again outdone itself.” Well, here’s the deal. Consequence of Sound has been unable to confirm any rumor, and thus we are holding off on dropping any names, because it is entirely possible that what we’ve heard won’t turn out to be true. That being said, we have heard some noise - five names to be exact, all of whom are big enough to serve as a headliner. Four of these names were apparently being considered as possible replacements for Amy Winehouse. However, once M.I.A. was added, that obviously changed things. Still, these four acts are names - not Smiths reunion big - but significant enough to sell a few tickets, and I see no reason to believe why Coachella wouldn’t look to add one or two of them. The fifth name, however, is Smiths reunion big, well almost, and has been rumored for quite some time. It’s add would probably make any other addition unnecessary.
So as you can see, it’s hard to gauge one is true, and one is not. I will say that these rumors do come from reliable sources, so if you’re looking for anything to be hopeful about, take stock in that. Still, I don’t believe it’s concrete enough to go out on a limb and drop these names for the reasons I mentioned above. However, it would be a little lame of me not to leave you with anything, so here are five acts that aren’t part of the “five names”: The Smiths, Pavement, Depeche Mode, David Bowie and Michael Jackson.
Outside Lands Music Festival:
As we previously noted, the Outside Lands Music Festival will indeed be returning for its second go around later this summer, August 28-30 to be exact. While this is still a long ways off, the folks behind the San Francisco festival will drop the most sought after detail on Monday when they announced the 2009 lineup. Apparently Outside Land’s Ranger Dave, aka Twitter, will be offering hints until then. But let’s be serious, who needs hints when you have the Outside Lands Outlook page to offer a few rumors - The Mars Volta, Dave Matthews Band, and Gogol Bordello all look to be safe bets.
Treasure Island Music Festival:
Just a week after Street Scene dropped its 2009 details, California’s other fall festival has done the same. The third annual Treasure Island Music Festival will return to San Francisco’s Treasure Island from October 17-18 for two days of “stellar and diverse” music: Saturday will feature two stages of electronic and dance oriented acts, while Sunday will offer a lineup of national and local indie rock artists. A Ferris wheel will also be at attendees’ disposal. The full lineup and and on-sale information will be announced early this summer.
In non-California festival news, Forecastle recently unveiled a few more names, as did the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.
As always, be sure to check out CoS’ FestivalOutlook.com for all your latest festival news and rumors. And if you’ve got a friend overseas, be sure to let them know that the Outlook just ain’t for Americans - we are constantly updating the European section. Oh, and got a tip? Drop us a line…

Re: Anonymous on Apr 13th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Unless Goldenvoice realized how completely retarded and unreasonable it would be to have two of the three biggest draws playing at the same time during a 12 hour day and fixed it.
Their timing is off then:
Beirut quote:
we are playing on the Mojave Stage at 8:30, which is a half hour after Morrissey goes on and right after Leonard Cohen finishes.
someone in beirut said in email that they are in the Mojave during morrissey. if u cant keep up dont bother playing along.
I’m usually really excited for set times to come out, but for some reason I’m really afraid that this year is going to be brutal as far as conflicts go. There’s just too many good bands that would seem to be playing on either the Main Stage or the Mojave early in the day, which probably means they’ll be playing at the same time. Regardless, we’ll probably know by this time tomorrow…
The set times below are fake. Whoever came up with them forgot to put Beirut before Leonard Cohen like he’s scheduled to play.
Ghostland before sunset and without LASERS would be lame.

*JS
Thanks for the independent thought!
So lemme get this straight CoS. You string us along for a week saying some huge adds are coming and that all of them could easily be headliners but won’t tell us who. Finally you break and you do and you tell us
The Pixies, who have a major member playing a Record Store day show in OHIO on Coachella weekend with her other band
The Strokes, who are pretty much has-beens at this point and have no new material out to promote
Faith No More, who haven’t even begun rehearsing for their reunion yet
Muse, who are shelled up working on their new album and don’t have US dates scheduled until the fall with U2
and finally U2, who are a LiveNation band, would cause mega ticket sales but oops, its less than 7 days away now and probably nobody is going to book a flight, buy tickets to the festival at this point.
Then Joss Stone gets added.
Thanks for not knowing jack about rumors.
The Pixies aren’t playing because The Breeders have an Ohio in-store on Record Store Day: http://www.shakeitrecords.com/newsletter/shake%20it%20update.htm
Now Bill play nice. No need to call others Douche’s I was just trying to bring a little joy into your life.
the “bobbyrisigliano” moniker comes from the great movie cult classic “MADE” with Jon Favereau and Vince Vaughn. Jon Favereau’s character does make pasta in the movie. Alas its not “Ravioli”.
seeing those names makes me feel better that they got m.i.a. she probably cost less to get too.
I don’t think it will be any of them. It’s too late for most to significantly help with ticket sales, except for U2, obviously.
Way to go, Alex. Thanks for putting the rumors of rumors to rest. I’m relieved even if none of them do happen.
Hey Alex, April Fool’s day ends at 12am on April 2nd. You’re a bit over a week late on letting us in on the joke, but you can give it up now. kthxbye!
Re: Alex Young on Apr 10th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Only one?
Kings of Leon?
Alex, thanks for nothing. There isn’t going to be any more adds. We’ve all become spoiled b/c Paul T & gang have pulled off some amazing miracles the past few years. It’s a week away…we got a great lineup….breathe in, accept it and have a blast.
And, Mike, the douche-y Rick Astley fan….bugger off, ya twit. Alex, please remove that POS post.
the geezer
Yes, we already know, Alex: U2. Get on with the other 4 now, wouldjya please?
One of them has to be Pearl Jam with their Ten celebration
Re: Chad’s list.
One of the 5 names is there.
Dead Weather isn’t one, but I could definitely see them playing at some point during Coachella.
Breaking news right here
http://smouch.net/lol/
way to go, CoS.
“we got an inside source… 5 names… but we can’t tell you ’til tomorrow.”
(tomorrow)
“lol jk”
seriously?
U2 is the big name. the four possibles are…
No Doubt
Janes Addiction
Green Day
Pearl Jam
Alex Young doesn’t know shit!
Alex, what about The Dead Weather? They’re playing their first real show in NY next week, and The Kills will already be at Coachella, so Allison will be there already. If I had to guess one logical add that’s not asking TOO much, they would probably be it. Thoughts?
I’m just saying that you send out a tweet and everyone goes nuts. Then you offer empty posts.
This same speculation goes on night and day on the Coachella board. It’s tiresome.
And bobbyravioli or whatever your name is, you are a gigantic douchebag. I never said I was looking for entertainment, just information.
has anyone said The White Stripes???
U2
Ringo Starr
Johnny Marr
Jane’s Addiction
NIN
Tool
Pearl Jam
Beck
Jarvis Cocker
Blur
Kanye was added the day the set times came out so you’re right about that. Madonna made the poster the minute she was announced and it said “In the Sahara Tent” next to her name. Adds would be great but I just don’t think see the sense in holding onto the names. Alex says Pavement is not one of the names yet he still has them listed under the Rumors section of the Coachella page.
Yeah, well, I remember both being added the week of Coachella. I don’t think either made the official poster - I could be wrong (it was three years ago and I could be mistaking Madonna for another artist), but I’m pretty sure. I’m 100% certain that Kanye was added on that Tuesday or Wednesday.
“I think Daft Punk and Kraftwerk should do something together”
http://www.urb.com/features/1219/BusyPFacetoFace.php?PageId=2
nadonna was added on march 1st from what my google news searches tell me which is nothing near the same week as coachella.
oops! forgot the Pixies. There we go. 7 names and 5 of those are on COS’s list.
Don’t forget that in 2006, Goldenvoice added both Kanye West and Madonna the week of the fest - and NEITHER of them performed remotely close to the headliner slot. Kanye even performed while the sun was still out!!!
5 names here we go: Neil Young, U2, Stone Roses, Daft Punk/Krafterk/Kraft Punk, Faith No More and Soundgarden. Oops! That’s 6.
Alex
I think you’ve done a good job this year with predictions and confirmations but I don’t see the harm in just telling us who the other 4 names rumored are now that we know the 5th is U2. The festival is a week away and it’s doubtful people are going to buy tickets based on your rumors alone unless they don’t know what the definition of rumor is. People who are going have already accepted the lineup as it is at this point. Coachella has a history of late adds but when we’re a week away we know the chances are less likely. If you tell us who they are and they don’t happen, it’ll just end up as a rumor that never solidified but doubt anybody will be disappointed more than they could be based on Saturday right now. If you tell us and at least one happens then we know you’re doing your job. 5 names total puts the odds in your favor. Just go for it.
It’s gotta be U2, although i would be happier with Greenday, Janes, or NIN.
And i dont see what’s so crazy about adding a headliner 1 week away.
1. If they do this, people will (as they already have) start EXPECTING big additions and for years to come will buy their tickets in advance for fear of the show being sold out.
2. And, please, sometimes it takes a while to book these acts - Coachella is the first festival in the circuit, so they have a disadvantage in a way, and advantage in another. They get to have people first, but some people just arent ready to commit by the time the lineup is announced.
3. LA is a big enough market that a huge saturday or sunday lineup addition would bring people out from there in a heartbeat. My friend is driving out and crashing at our place last minute. Everybody in LA has at least one friend who is going to coachella. Also, you could just camp.
here’s your entertainment Bill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd1AaOQKwm0&feature=channel_page
totally uninformed, but I’d guess Pixies.
Reply: Bill I don’t know if bored is the reason for this post. maybe just confusion on readers parts.
If you want to be entertained, I heard there was a guy wearing just a sock on YouTube doing RHCP karaoke? What could be more entertaining than that?
U2 sold out the Rose bowl in 4 hours…
So if there are going to announced new acts. What would be your guess as to web the annouce them, it just doesn’t seam logical to announce a headliner with less than a week before the fest.
daft punk?
the pixies?
muse?
green day?
Please post the rumour if/when it doesn’t eventuate Alex.
The Stone Roses
thanks alex! that’s good enough for me and i know which 1 you’re talking about. i can’t think of 4 other headliner-worthy names (neil young?) so if those happen, count me in as surprised!
Cleo, You have 1 of the 5 in that list. I think which one is pretty obvious by now.
its too bad you can’t give us more hints! here’s a list a name of guesses from your coachella page and it could be any of them when you think about how you worded the rumors!:
Springsteen?
coldplay?
nin?
jane’s?
tool?
oasis?
weezer?
blink 182?
blur?
50% more beatles?
johnny marr joining morrissey?
modest marr?
u2?
radiohead?
flaming lips?
pearl jam?
muse, blur, johnny marr, tool. my guesses
Coachella I feel like is dumb as shit to be adding all these names this last in the game…they cut themselves off for anyone who would want to book a hotel/flight…if they drop another huge name that I personally like I would have gone all the way from OH…now there is no chance…I don’t think it is smart business on their part on how to most effectively sell tickets. I know everyone thinks Goldenvoice is this genius but I know marketing and sales too and they don’t do it the most efficient way.
Unless of course they can’t get these people to ink these huge deals until a week before the show and then that is a whole different problem.
U2….Marr and Moz and Ringo with Macca…there…
jesus…just say it already…U2 is the rumor…
Bill - It never intended to be nonsense. It started as one simple tweet that blew way out of proportion. Are there rumors? Yes. Are they locks?
That being said, do you honestly believe Coachella is going to celebrate its 10th anniversary with The Killers headlining Saturday? They don’t call this festival Coachella for a reason.
All of this nonsense you’ve been spewing all week comes down to another post full of nothing.
Man, how bored are you guys?
