Coachella offers up ‘09 schedule
4119 minutes from the publishing of this post (3:25 p.m. EST), Switch will take the stage to kick off the 10th annual the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Yes ladies and gentlemen, with less than three days to go, the 2009 schedule has finally been released!
Leonard Cohen leading into Morrissey leading into McCartney? The Hold Steady vs. M. Ward? Okkervil River vs. The Gaslight Anthem? Wow, and that’s only the beginning…

damn, i’d be really pissed on sunday, far too many conflicts with the cure.
the orb, the kills, public enemy and throbbing gristle but the cure would win out….they would always win out for me.

Yeah, went in 2006 and ‘07, but skipped out last year, which must have been the first year they spaced out the headliners like that. Whatever works.
As far as M.I.A. being on the main stage, I’m sure folks many will love it. Pairing her up with Thiev Corp. makes sense too, but I can’t imagine the crowd being as large as if BoH, the Chemical Brothers or TVOTR were on then. Besides, isn’t half the fun of “watching” an M.I.A. set the fact that you are in a cluster?

Worst conflicts on Sunday The Cure->Public Enemy->The Orb
friday- looks the best to me actually with sir paul, the black keys, cage the elephant, leonard cohen and peanut butter wolf. really nothing to ruin my day there.
saturday- that atmosphere vs mastodon vs mstrkrft is a wicked “killer” and booker t vs travis and dj am sucks.
sunday- just looks boring except for lupe and the kills

When Coachella has big names like Prince, Roger Waters and now McCartney, they do usually blackout the Outdoor stage.
Also, MIA in the Sahara last year was a total clusterf*ck, much better for her to be on the main stage.

Friday: I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “shadow”. Coachella traditionally fills all the stages at all times (unlike Bonnaroo). Whether they add a name or not, there’s plenty to see.
Sunday: You might be right about the 70 min gap, but there are certainly large gaps elsewhere.
I wasn’t expecting a big addition the same day that they released the schedule. I’m not sure I’m expecting a big addition period, but I do think there will be a couple of new names on the final lineup.

friday: i don’t think they could add someone that could shadow one of their headliners. it just wouldn’t be right.
sunday: i think the 70 minutes gap between paul weller and public enemy could be due to the fact that mbv plays at a higher than usual volume so the bleed on the outdoor theater would be nasty.
those are the most plausible holes i found.
i still hope faith no more for lolla, btw.

How about three throwbacks: the Cure vs. Public Enemy vs. Groove Armada. Granted, the Cure and Public Enemy have no clashing sound qualities, but the old school/reunion vibe is there.
Hippie revival: Dr. Dog vs. Drive-by Truckers vs. Blitzen Trapper
Those are not my personal conflicts, but the worst general decisions that I see (in addition to the others I already mention below)
Looking like there may be room:
Friday: tons! Has Coachella ever had the Outdoor Stage completely open like it is when McCartney is scheduled? It looks like ‘Roo. Plus, look at the gap between Leonard Cohen & SPU
Saturday: I don’t see much room after the Killers (unless they squeeze the space between the acts on the Coachella Stage down or let the Killers play after 12). Regardless, that is one wacky looking main stage! Thievery Corp is great, but that is a strange place for them and keeping M.I.A. out of the Sahara Tent is a mistake. Band of Horses should be on the the Coachella Stage.
Sunday: Not much I can say - Unless the Cure is playing for 2 1/2 hours and the Orb for 3, there are some major holes. Plus, I highly doubt PE needs 70 minutes to set up (I mean, it is a hip hop group). Is the Coachella Stage really not starting until after 1:30?
Bizarre!!! Looking more like ‘Roo and other fests. There are either going to be some longer sets or major holes in the sets this year.
This makes me even happier about APW.
