Pearl Jam continues to surprise us…
Argue ’til the midnight hour, but Pearl Jam looks to be the hottest act this year, and oddly enough, they’ve yet to release a lick of new material. Between headlining slots at ACL and Outside Lands, super, mega, conjunga re-issues, a solo tour, and the promise of a new album, the Seattle rockers continue to find room on their plates to pile more shit on. Again, there’s no complaining from this party, but my god, someone needs to mail them some Valium.
This time around, and according to Billboard, the band is working with director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous) on a new documentary or film that will chronicle their decade-plus history. If you recall, Eddie Vedder and his rag tag team have a history with the director, one that started back on the 1992 film, Singles. In the film, Vedder, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard made tongue-in-cheek appearances as Matt Dillon’s backing band, Citizen Dick. Crowe would later go on to spotlight the band for a Rolling Stone cover story.
“We’re building up to our big 20th anniversary,” guitarist Mike McCready said, while on Seattle’s “Ron & Don Show.” “We’re trying to have a little campaign of building rereleases with new mixes and new outtakes up until that time. We’re trying to do a movie with Cameron Crowe with all of our existing footage.”
Fans will no doubt be pleased of this new film with Crowe. If anyone is primed to do a documentary on them, he’s the man for the job. No Pearl Jam fan will disagree with that (including this writer, who’s a self obsessed fan of the director). Though details are slim at this point, we’ll keep you updated as this unfolds.
As for the band, keep a close eye on them. We may be in for more surprises.

I’m sure a new album is coming this fall, since it would make little sense to not release a CD that’s already finished until after the Aug.-Oct. tour.
They’re not becoming a nostalgia act by any means. Their latest record helped revive them according to most fans. I think the focus on re-releases is to make money (something we’ve seen over the past few years with the increase in ticket prices and super-deluxe editions).
I agree, sir. However, I love their later material and they’re still relevant, at least I think so, in their respected genre: RAWK.
The last album was pretty good, but I can’t exactly blame the guys for choosing to focus on the old material as they reach their milestone. As old as it makes me feel to admit it, they’re reaching that point in their career where they’re viewed primarily as a nostalgia band. And this is coming from a mega-fan.
