Lollapalooza finally shares ‘09 lineup

Lollapalooza finally shares ‘09 lineup

There’s really no good way to open the lineup announcement for Perry Farrell’s brainchild that is Lollapalooza, what with all the leaks, rumors, and war of words accompanying the recent months. In fact, to say this moment has been anticipated is perhaps the biggest understatement of the year. So, rather than crack jokes about Perry or talk about how awesome Grant Park will be from August 7-9, let’s just get right into it.

As expected, the recently reunited Jane’s Addiction, Tool - yes, Tool, the 40+ year-old hip-hoppers better known as the Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode in what will be their only festival appearance of the summer, The Killers in all their flower wearing glory, and 2009 festival whores extraordinaire Kings of Leon head the bill of Lollapalooza 2009. Other acts of note include Lou Reed, The Decemberists, Ben Folds, Ben Harper & Relentless7, TV on the Radio, Rise Against, Thievery Corporation, and Vampire Weekend.

The Man, Ra Ra Riot, The Ravonettes, Rise Against, Robert Earl Keen, Sam Roberts Band, Santogold, Silversun Pickups, Snoop Dogg, STS9, TheNewNo2, Thievery Corporation, Tool, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend, The Virgins, White Lies, Zap Mamma

And spinning at PERRY’S: A-Trak, Animal Collective (DJ Set), Bassnectar, The Bloody Beetroots (DJ Set), Boys Noize, Car Stereo (Wars), Crookers, Dark Wave Disco, Deadmau5, The Glitch Mob, He Say, She Say, Hercules and Love Affair (DJ Set), Hollywood Holt, Kaskade, Kid Cudi, LA Riots, Moneypenny, MSTRKRFT, Rye Rye, Simian Mobile Disco, Yellow Fever

1. LOU REED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. i dont want to go, but if three or more of: Deacon, Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Lou Reed, No Age, Gang Gang Dance) are on the same day, I’ll have to go for a one-day.

3. Somebody explain Ben Harper to me? Why is he at every festival and why does he get so high a billing?

4. I retract my earlier statement. I’m liking this line-up the more and more I look at it.

5. not liking the lack of rancid… was kinda pumped to see them at the festival setting

6. This is the most stacked lineup of the summer I feel. No matter what your music taste is, there are bands here that can appeal to anyone. The top 7 are all headlining caliber…. arguably. I was just getting more and more excited as I would read down the list. It seemed to get better and better the further down I would read. I almost shat myself when I saw Lou Reed!! And Animal collective with two different sets!!! you have got to be kidding me. Now if only this lineup could make it at a camping festival, this would be a perfect world, especially for bands like sts9 who are perfect for late night sets.

Quit bitching about the beastie boys people. For any beastie complainers out there, watch a full set and then try to tell me they are not headlining material.

7. Anonymous on April 21 at 3:55 PM is a Douche. You possess Douche-like thoughts that formulate into Douche-like words because you are a Douche. Nothing more. Nothing less. Just Douche.

8. Lollapalooza-
please find it in your heart to schedule tool either the 7th or the 9th, i have a wedding to go to on the 8th in st. louis… i have yet to see tool in my lifetime and would donate body parts to not miss this 09 tour…god only knows when the fuck they might tour again…please please please please please!!!!

9. for the love oof everything holy, there are plenty of festivals for everyone, quit the bellyaching if all your bands arent there, in so far as beasties being “festival whores”…you guys are idiots, did you NOT know that the beasties went on a reunion tour in 2007? did you NOT know that they barely sold out any shows? so wouldnt it make sense to play festivals where people buy tickets not just to see ONE band, maybe then they can start building a following for their anticipated new album…hmm…a lot of bands play MULTIPLE festivals…AND FURTHERMORE BEN HARPER IS PLAYING TWICE THE AMOUNT OF FESTIVALS THEN THE BEASTIES…SO SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

Lollapalooza-

10. who cares if the beastie boys are the festival whore this year. jack johnson was last year and i much prefer the beastie boys but lolla is most definitely not better than roo. no matter what the argument can be for either lineup is a festival that ends around 10p.m. compared to a festival that goes close to 24 hours is no way near as good

11. Also… how on Earth did Metric not make the initial list? Didnt SPIN magazine confirm them in the Festival Section?

12. Some people were just going to complain no matter what.

If you cant find a dozen or so acts on this incredible lineup, that make 200 bucks worth it, then I have absolutely no idea how you even found this website or what the hell you’ve been listening to.

I know there are a couple big names missing from the list, but I still think Lolla is better than ‘Roo and Coachella. There is still some hope that a couple of those big names will get added. There are 24 bands still left to get booked.

This lineup is better than 2008s, even with the “weaker” headliners. The middle tiers are stacked with goodness.

Im certain 2009 will be filled with some pretty tough conflicts.

13. Lineup is amazing. Wish Chicago was closer.

14. agreed, middle bill is fucking awesome, headlines disappointing

15. Does anyone else feel like the Beastie Boys are the real festival whores of the summer? How many fests are they headlining? Not that I’m complaining, but come on…

16. i see dozens of bands that i would love to see on this lineup.. i am pumped.. for me, its much better than bonnarroo or coachella.. so i am most likely there..

also the potential for some really nice aftershows here…

17. Amazing lineup.

18. psssh only 200 bucks all in to see this many baller ass mid-level bands!?!?!?…. IM IN! chi-city mayne!!! headliners are a lil wack but that’s usually not what i shell out my money for anyways. <3 grant park

19. If they could somehow make it where Tool wasn’t actually Tool but another interesting, awesome act…then it’d be perfect.

20. let’s hope that depeche mode and jane’s addiction don’t conflict. throw in kings of leon or beastie boys instead.

21. If they could add in one more hip hop act like Public Enemy or Q-Tip and Yeah Yeah Yeahs this would be the perfect lineup for me…oh and somehow make Tool and Beastie Boys not play against each other…

22. I have to say this one of the best lineups I have seen so far this year. I would probably rank this second to Bonnaroo, only because a quarter of the lineup is on Bonnaroo’s roster. The headliners are not as stunning as last year, but solid none the less and under card has vastly improved from last year. You could definitely tell where all the money was tied up last year. Overall, people who go to Lolla will leave with a smile on their face.

23. How much did Goldenvoice pay MY Bloody Valentine not to play any other festivals? Glad they are playing APW with echo and yyys.

24. hopefully they dont put the killers against kings of leon. i would have no headliner to watch.

25. Arctic Monkeys should be headliners

26. I regularly attend 3-4 major festivals / year. This is one of the strongest lineups top-bottom I’ve ever seen. The electronic portion alone is sick! For those that haven’t seen Boyz Noise, Bloody Beetroots, Crookers, SMD, MSTRKRFT (likely w/ John Legend!), Hercules, Kid Cudi, the list of face-melting is too long to name them all. Tool alone will make the festival for me personally. Oh, and Dan Deacon’s new setup is crazy. Roughly a dozen onstate w/ 4 drum kits.

27. Majority of adds will probably be Kids Stage adds. They usually do them later if I’m not mistaken.

28. its only like 90 bands listed total the tickets say there are 130 bands so still some late adds when the schedule is released i assume

29. we’ll prob see a few mid level adds

30. Definitely a solid middle of the lineup. My only complaint would be the lack of a big-time electronic act like Chemical brothers, Justice, Daft Punk, something like that. But the tent should be cool either way.

31. tasty, tasty jazz

32. This is the best line up since Warped Tour 2002.

33. Depeche Mode
Jane’s Addiction
Lou Reed
Thievery Corporation
Snoop Dogg
Andrew Bird
TV on the Radio
Vampire Weekend
STS9
Animal Collective
Band of Horses
Fleet Foxes
Dan Auerbach
Dan Deacon
Ezra Furman and the Harpoons
Sam Roberts Band
Bassnectar
MSTKRFT
Boyz Noise
Kid Cudi
Crookers
Yello Fever
and of course The Animal Collective DJ set

Obviously, there’s no chance I’ll see all these bands but I’m pumped nonetheless

34. the middle is way too good… goddamn this will be fun

35. Lot’s of acts missing that we thought would be there for sure:

Franz
Mars Volta
Beirut
Street Sweeper
Conor Oberts
Ben Kweller
Dead Weather
Rancid
Metric
MIA

a lot of late adds?

36. Eh. Where the hell is Regina, Ben, and Rancid? Ugh.

37. What the Hell? This is soo disappointing.

No Yeah Yeah Yeahs, no Franz Ferdinand, no Mastodon, no Modest Mouse, no M.I.A., no Conor Oberst.

38. Arctic Monkeys played a great set at ACL ‘07. They are the only artist that jumped out at me besides the ‘09 “Festival whores” (Ben Harper and the Relentless7, Beastie Boys, TV on the Radio, Kings of Leon, etc..) Assuming all the previously mentioned “festival whores” are present at ACL ‘09, it will be a no go for Lolla ‘09 for me.

39. so… no yeah yeah yeahs? will they add them later? if they could just add royksopp and fever ray….

40. No Rancid? boo

41. Great mid/low tier. I’m anxiously awaiting August 7th.

42. there is no conor oberst/mvb on the Lolla website

43. Certainly weaker than the last three years, but the middle bill is insane. Perry’s Tent should be dope.

44. weak sauce compared to last year

45. [...] because it’s Lollapalooza day doesn’t mean other festivals have to keep quiet with their own 2009 plans. In fact, today is [...]
