Watch: Green Day’s “Enemy”
Last week, Green Day pulled the curtain down from the rafters and unveiled its first single since 2005’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, and while fan’s reactions have been mixed, no one can deny this Oakland trio’s hype machine is still scorching hot. That’s why it’s fitting there’s fire in the new video — and lots of it, too.
“Know Your Enemy” is about as simple as it gets. The drum beat marches, the bass thumps along, and the guitar pops and scrapes. The video, directed by Matthew Cullen (Weezer, Velvet Revolver), is pretty paint-by-numbers, too. It’s a performance piece, and a seemingly phoned in one at that, and although the effigies (fitting, you know, because of the lyrics) add some tension, it’s all somewhat of a letdown. It sort of makes you nostalgic for all that green paint from the “American Idiot” video. Or was it green water?
Of course, considering 21st Century Breakdown is pegged to be overloaded with energetic, sweeping epics, the minimalistic redundancy of “Enemy” might be a breath of fresh air. After all, how many are spinning “The Homecoming” over “Holiday” these days?
Rhetorical question, folks.
21st Century Breakdown will be released worldwide on May 15th with a full U.S. tour to follow, beginning July 3rd in Seattle, Washington.
