Billy Corgan “finds” drummer, returns October…

Let’s face it, 2009 has not been kind to Billy Corgan. Sure, the Super Bowl tie in seemed like a good idea (at least to the Great Pumpkin), but think of all the bad karma that soon followed. Jimmy Chamberlin bailed, Corgan hit the ring, drummers were put on call, and fans continued to split hairs. In fact, things got so downright miserable for the (former) Chicagoan that he asked fans to pray for him. Talk about a meltdown, right?

Well, things are looking up, at least as up as they can get. In a new blog entry, posted last Friday, Corgan brought fans up to speed on his whereabouts, including the possibility of a new drummer and his recent time in the studio.

As I said recently, I am still on target for putting out new music in October. There certainly is no shortage of ideas to choose from. And I think I have my drummer of the future. I’ve worked with him so far for one week and all indications are really good that he’s the man for the job. Going to work with him some more before it becomes official. Whoever takes the job has quite big shoes to fill, no doubt about it.

Just who exactly is this drummer? According to Idolator, who did some prime detective work, Corgan’s hiring 19-year-old Mike Byrne, of Portland indie rock unit, Moses, Smell the Roses. How do they know? On the band’s MySpace blog entry, Byrne wrote, “off for another couple of weeks at pumpkin camp.” But that could just mean a tryout, right? Not if this Twitter entry has anything to say, which confirms Corgan’s “drummer of the future” was, indeed, in reference to Byrne.

Regardless, Corgan still plans to cut some new material for the rather fitting month of October. He’s still using the ol’ moniker, but at this point, what does it even mean anymore? Nada.

Meet the new hired gun…

  1. Methinks some of you are just not in tune with NEW material and exploratory music. Here’s the real deal, if you like Billy Corgan then you will give his new road a chance to draw you in. If not, go back and listen to Gish and Mellon Collie and pretend you’re in high school again.

  2. Ugh Give it a rest, Bill. Out of money? Get a real job!

  4. Ugh. Give it a rest, Bill. Out of money? Time to get a real job. As evidenced by your latest works, whatever you had that made the pumpkins so good has been lost.

  5. saw them on their last tour and lost all respect for Billy. it wasn’t just that they were sucking, he was being an asshole and they did all these stupid jams that didn’t go anywhere.

  6. I saw them in their last tour and I liked their show. But it is a fact that it was better when Smashing Pumpkins was a band and not a solo project.

  7. i didn’t hate zeitgiest but they sucked at vfest. they are one band that have always sucked live. each and every time i’ve seen them i’ve left early cos’ listening and watching him perform is pure torture.

  8. I think i might be in the minority when i say that zeitgiest was a pretty solid cd. Although i must say i lost some respect when i saw the clip of billy on TNA wrestling singing a HORRIBLE version of bullet with butterfly wings lol

  9. just what the world doesn’t need - more music from billy corgan.

  10. [...] or, in other words, Billy Corgan. Between losing Jimmy Chamberlin, appearing in wrestling promos, adding 19-yr-old drummer Mike Byrne, doing that short Spirits stint, and asking fans for prayers, it makes sense that the forthcoming [...]
