Watch: Green Day’s “21 Guns”
Two months after they warned us of our “Enemy”, Green Day’s back… and with “21 Guns”. The second single off of the band’s latest critical darling, 21st Century Breakdown, finds the three turning things down a bit. It’s a ballad, but there’s still enough punch in it to please the latest faux punk rocker these days. Last night, via MySpace, the band unveiled the song’s corresponding video.
Directed by Marc Webb, the video finds our beloved three (actually four, with Jason White) rocking away in a dusty, seemingly Los Angeles-styled home. They’re not alone, however. As Billie Joe Armstrong strums on his black acoustic, the album’s pivotal characters, Christian and Gloria, stand about in standard, dramatic poses. Big deal, right? Things get hot and heavy by the song’s first chorus, that is when bullets ricochet and destroy everything around the characters and band. It’s a step up from “Enemy”’s sub-par performance video, but considering the song’s one of the album’s weakest, there’s hardly much to work with — and it cuts out the dreary fade-in’s, too!
It would seem that Green Day is really pushing the image of this album, nearly following the track-by-track progress that American Idiot’s videos set. If this video’s any indication, fans can expect more of the story to unfold as they choose and film more singles. “Peacemakers”, please? As for the band’s current plans, they hit the road soon, which is sure to make many fans happy — this writer included.

As much as I’ve liked the last two albums, is it safe to say the best songs off of AI/21CB are not as good as the best songs on Dookie/Insomniac? Or is that like comparing apples and oranges?
At least American Idiot didn’t have as many crappy ballads and angsty lyrics.
The close-ups on Billie Joe with his eyeliner and sceney black hair are disgusting. YOU’RE PUSHING 40, STOP TRYING TO APPEAL TO LITTLE GIRLS WHO LISTEN TO MCR.
