Black Eyed Peas stole track from Adam Freeland… maybe
Earlier this week, The Daily Swarm reported on the eerily similar sounds appearing on Adam Freeland’s “Mancry” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “Party All The Time”. Of course, because Freeland’s song was released prior to that of Black Eyed Peas, the issue of plagiarism came into play, and because “Party All The Time” is part of an album that hit #1 on the Billboard 200, it’s sort of a really big deal.
Today, the Black Eyed Peas responded to the allegations of plagiarism as baseless, noting in an interview with the Times of Malta that “[Freeland]’s had offered them a beat and it was a case of working together.” However, because the Peas were unable to “finalize legalities,” as Will.i.am explains, “clearance was not done and that was what it was about.”
…And that apparently makes it ok. Ah, music.
Adam Freeland has been in the business to know that “sampling” is not the proper word here, the Chord Structure of his Riff seems to have been RE-PLAYED, with loads of effects on it.
It is the same Chord Structure no doubt, but since it was replayed Freeland would be due a piece of Publishing and his work citied, not the windfall of a sample having to be “Cleared” which would add substantially more $$$$ to his argument.
Also Freeland seems to always write his tunes with other people, so maybe he wrote Mancry with Alex Metric, he would then, theoretically also be due some publishing money if this all gets sorted.
I think what they did is beyond sampling. It’s the entire song! But that’s just my opinion.
so true. it’s called sampling if you’ve purchased the rights/have permission, plagiarism if you just rip off somebody’s sound and publish it as your own.
its called sampling ffs. daft punk do it 4 all their songs and theyre brilliant. we dont all scream plagerism every time someone remixes a song so why is this any different?
