The Raveonettes kill on latest single, “Suicide”
An early mp3 release of The Raveonettes’ latest single, “Suicide”, shows the band carrying on its electronica/doo-wop mind-meld and continuing to brainwash us all with its addictive harmonies and synthy riffs. Newcomers to the band, be melodramatically warned: You are an easy target for the persuasive powers of “Suicide”.
While the Danish duo has long advertised its early rock characteristics — the name Raveonettes is a mash-up of Buddy Holly’s “Rave On” and Phil Specter’s Ronettes — “Suicide” wears numerous influences on its sleeve. The opening chords mimic Urge Overkill’s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” (including the lyrics “Dream little girl/On along the street/Little runaway girl”) and the song maintains that haunted-echo quality throughout as it pulsates all Britpop-like. Right up to the chorus, where it awesomely steals every great Go-Go’s lick at once.
“Suicide” can also brag one of the best-penned lyrics of 2009 so far: “New York’s the shit.” It’ll be out on The Raveonettes’ upcoming album, In and Out of Control, which drops October 6th.
