Outside Lands taps Tenacious D to replace Beastie Boys
Of all the names the 2009 Outside Lands Music Festival was rumored to be considering as a replacement for the Beastie Boys, Tenacious D was never one of them. So much for rumors.
Today, the San Francisco based music festival, scheduled to take place from August 28-30 in Golden Gate Park, tapped “the Greatest Band in the World,” aka Jack Black and Kyle Glass, aka Tenacious D, to replace the Beastie Boys as Sunday night headliner.
The performance is the legendary band’s first appearance in the Bay Area in three years and their United States Festival debut.

some of you haters need to seriously cut APE some slack here. Finding a headliner on a BBoy scale like that at last minute is not so simple. It’s alot more complicated than that, especially when it come to negotiations/finances.

APE FAIL. Tenacious D? Is this some kind of bad joke?!? The only thing I could imagine them headlining would be a comedy show.
I saw TD almost 10 years ago in Atlanta. It was an amazing, entertaining hella good time then and will not fail to do the same at OSL. I’ll be traveling from Atlanta for the festival and I have to say TD will end a weekend of amazing music and fun on a high note. JB and KG will not disappoint and I’m sure they are stoked about playing some good ol rock and roll. Bring it!!!!

Wow, that’s the best you got APE? This could be the end of Outside Lands. Reminds me of the second year of Vegoose when they blew it by having Petty, Fiona Apple, and the Black Crowes as headliners. Oh well, PJ will be awesome!! Those of you who are going should also make sure to see TVOTR and Mars Volta.

Regardless of whether or not Tenacious D is headlining material, you gotta at least have some sympathy for the organizers. It’s not their fault that the Beasties dropped, and it’s hard to find a last-minute replacement for one of the most anticipated acts. Just be happy that MIA won’t be closing out the night.
There will no doubt be some interesting guest spots during this set…

yeah, that’s what i say. who cares about headliners or not. Most of the bands I’m going to see are not headliners.
I’d much rather see The D than some generic band that sells millions of records that I don’t care for.

Do I think The D are headlining material? No way. Do I think it will be a great way to wrap-up the festival? F**k and Yes. People get too hung up on how big the name is vs. the timing and vibe of the festival. I went down to this festival last year and Jack Johnson headlined the last day. It was absolutely dreadful- we left after Wilco. I’ll be sticking around for the final act this year.

Just to clarify, other than the one Dead Weather song Jack White drops the drum sticks for, he won’t be picking up a guitar at Outside Lands, correct?
Because yes, the thought of Jack White playing lead guitar would tickle my fancy enough to but tickets.
The thought of Jack Black playing guitar….somewhat less so.
