What is to become of U2’s claw?

Q. What is to become of U2’s mammoth 390-ton, £15m claw used by the band on its currently ongoing 360 tour that David Byrne hates so much but which U2 defends since, as Edge recently said, “I think anybody that’s touring is going to have a carbon footprint,” and because it allows all 80,000+ who attend each show to get a pretty decent view of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” (complete w/ Joe Strummer shout out)?

A. There’s actually three claws to be exact and they quite possibly could either become permanent concert pavilions, venues for the 2012 Olympics, or something entirely different that has yet to be mentioned and makes any post on this story, like the one you’re currently reading right now (though I was able to include a link of U2 covering The Clash… so that does make this post totally worth it), a complete waste of time.

  1. Having worked on a local crew loading in and out one of those claws I must first say…
    1) The claws truly are gargantuan being the first stage I’ve worked on that requires the construction of temporary towers to aid in the construction of the main structure.
    2) Although U2 did not donate their money to “AIDS research” they did spend an incredible amount of money elsewhere. First, the stages are rumored to become permanent structures, giving new weight bearing venues to areas without them and aiding future bands by supplying such spaces. They spent so much money on manning the concert that it was tough to fill all the spots. This means they were aiding the job market, at least here in the states, and giving many an opportunity they may not typically get. (This was the first concert I’ve worked on where the lunches were catered in the press box)
    3) U2 has always and will always be the first band I would thank personally for the efforts put forth to entertain while helping many.

  2. DAvid BrYnes is a bitter, washed up bloody waNKER!!!! u2 & bono have done more good in one concert than cranky Davy boy will in his unhappy “once in a Lifetime” time to put on your big suit davy & fade away……

  3. I bet if they took all that money spent on the claws and put it towards AIDS research… there would still be absolutely no progress on AIDS treatment.

  4. they probably care about what david byrne has to say as much as bono on any issue.
