Lolla Aftershow: Raveonettes fuzz out the restless at the Empty Bottle (8/8)

By on August 10th, 2009

The older I get the more there are times when I feel like a cranky old lady: complaining about crowds, overpriced drinks and the antics of “those young people.” Saturday night, as I waited for The Raveonettes to take the stage at the Empty Bottle for a Lollapalooza after show, was one of those times. [...]

Bell Horses to trot out debut album October 13th

By on August 10th, 2009

Indie-pop supergroups are not immune to the economic downturn. As the more-is-more ethos evermore becomes so Bush-league, megasized musical collectives — whether Animal in name or raconteurish in nature — may find themselves pushed aside by outfits such as Bell Horses, a new superduo. It is solely composed of 90s-era Silver Apples multi-instrumentalist/lone member of [...]

Has Flight of the Conchords really run its course?

By on August 10th, 2009

Over the last two years, the dynamic Kiwi duo better known as Flight of the Conchords has captured our hearts and made us laugh so hard we choked on our spaghetti. And with two hilarious seasons and a couple of wonderful accompanying soundtracks under their belt, one would think that this was just the beginning [...]

Live at Lollapalooza ‘09: Day 3

By , , and on August 10th, 2009

Sunday’s are designed for one thing: being lazy. For the greater Chicago population, this past Sunday was anything but that. Instead, it was all about sweating off those Lobster Corn Dogs, wearing down those already worn out Chucks, and irritating those well-established sunburns from Saturday’s “fun in the sun.” But that summarizes every closing day at Lollapalooza — it’s what gives each festivalgoer that merit badge by sundown. And if we’ve learned anything from Cub (or Girl) Scouts, those badges don’t come easy.

Lolla Aftershow: Fleet Foxes soothe a sweltering Metro (8/8)

No heat fatigue’s gonna stop us from partying on!

Live at Lollapalooza ’09: Day 2

By , and on August 9th, 2009

With weather reports predicting high temperatures of up to 95 degrees, day two of Lollapalooza wasn’t exactly going to be a walk in the park, either. Well, in some respects it was, but you get the idea. By high noon, mile-long lines had already gathered at every beverage stand, and hundreds of bikini-clad girls flashed around their fresh and fashionable sunburns. Neither shade nor sunscreen made a difference — even the Ice Cream Man couldn’t save the day!

Lolla Aftershow: Lykke Li knocks out the Bottom Lounge (8/7)

By on August 8th, 2009

Despite the rain, the jaw-dropping closing set from Depeche Mode, and the resulting hellish traffic…the musical fiesta still continued.

Live at Lollapalooza ’09: Day 1

By , , and on August 8th, 2009

Given this year’s summer weather conditions in Chicago — chilly with a taste of sunlight — nobody expected the onslaught of rain and wind that was August 7th, 2009. Incidentally, that happened to make up the opening day of Perry Farrell’s summer music extravaganza, otherwise known as Lollapalooza. As fans rolled in at the crack of noon, rain followed… and lots of it. Some might say it was a dreary English day, which seemed fitting given the talent headlining — Depeche Mode, for those unsavvy with geography.
