  1. what do car companies do to advertise? buy commercial time during the superbowl. or, sponsor the taylor swift tour. or, maybe spend money on something that has nothing directly to do with you…you music listeners, or enthusiasts, as you would like to be called. how about a company that cares about music, any kind of music, like thrash, hip hop, disco, and maybe even garage, so they can give something back to both listeners and artists with a kick ass free event. whiners.

  2. This festival is about advertising the corporate name through the bands directly to their fans, also through garage rock blogs, messageboards and word of mouth.
Scion could care less about the music, they are just targeting another demographic.
Most of these bands are being flown out and are getting way more than their usual guarantee. These bands use a booking agent, most of these bands would say “fuck you” to their record label if they were told to play free shows.
Also- More people don’t go to college than do.
Not everyone is poor, some people still buy cars and houses. Big shock!

  3. 14K? that’s a crock. it is closer to 27K if you buy it brand new. 14K may be the sticker price, but by the time your done with all the add ons it’s closer to 27K. Most people getting out of college are lucky if they get a job in Starbucks. what world are you living in.

  4. And ye, Scion (a Toyota company) has plenty of money to pay these bands. Toyota is #1 worldwide & not hurting for cash. It’s part of the marketing budget & much cheaper than Superbowl airtime.

  5. Umm, well Scions only start at $14,000 or less, which is way below the average car cost. This IS the type of car college students go for right out of school, or young people who have good enough credit & a small budget who want a hipper car than a KIA. Scion has been marketing to the hip urban demographics since it’s inception. It seems to be working because that’s who I see driving them & lots of ‘em.

  6. I’m sure the car companies have money to pay these bands.

  7. they try and market their cars to college students and people in the indie rock demographic (age wise). what college student has 30K to spend on a new car? i don’t get it. it’s like get yourself in debt with a college loan! then get yourself in debt with a car loan! kind of gross.

why are all these bands always playing free shows anyway? how do they make any money? i don’t think it’s their merch sales. People who show up at free shows don’t want to spend money. I would be worried if my record label was always sticking me on free gigs - lowers your value to show buyers. what promoter is gonna pay you if the last string of shows were all free. GET PAID.

  8. What is going on? Car companies are all over the rock/indie scene it seems. Kia? Scion? What’s next - the Ford Funk Expo?
