Watch: Monsters of Folk invade Conan
If one were to put any stock into Monster of Folk’s performance on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien last night, which obviously I’m about to do, one can probably expect to see and hear the following things once the all-star collective of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, Jim James, and M. Ward launch their forthcoming North American tour in support of their newly release self-titled debut:
1.Will Johnson (of Centro-matic) will be the drummer for Monsters of Folk (his website now confirms this).
2. These gentlemen recently hit the Men’s Warehouse, though Conor has yet to lose the oversized sunglasses.
3. This will truly be a total team effort… and the Monsters weren’t lying when they said each member, minus Johnson, would be playing every instrument. After all, who else expected Mogis to handle the guitar solo on the band’s television debut?
4. While our review of the actual album is still forthcoming, I think I can safely speak for everyone and say the Monsters of Folk have crafted some pretty captivating music and will be putting on some pretty kick ass performances in the weeks ahead.
But don’t take my word for it. Make your own assumptions below…

Will Johnson had a very warm introduction by the band and also came out from behind the drums to play guitar with Jim on a MMJ song at the Commodore. I was there to see them play the other night.
Mike Mogis is a genious
Will got his due, Conan went back to shake his hand before the commercial break, I wish Will Johnson was in the rotation for the band instead of stuck behind the kit all night.
Shame that Will Johnson is in the background. Most talented guy up there and he doesn’t even get a handshake.
Really magical.
I love the song “Say Please.” I think the show last night was great. No bells, no whistles. Just real music coming from great artists.
Very cool to see all of them perform together, but the song is pretty underwhelming for me. I hope the rest of the record is much better.
