Check Out: Nickelback — we kid you not — covers Kings of Leon

Check Out: Nickelback — we kid you not — covers Kings of Leon

In a move that is tantamount to your ‘roided-out step-brother who drives an F150 singing Grizzly Bear, the boys of Nickelback have taken a modern rock swing at Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody”. And we finally get to see it.

The live video, which surfaced recently on Fark.com, is taken from a March 2nd performance at the Air Canada Centre. Lead singer Chad Kroger steps aside and lets lead guitarist Ryan Peake take a crack at KoL’s Top 100 hit. What ensues is some overly-wrought hard rock version of the song done by a Poison cover band. It’s not bad per say, but definitely without the emotional strength of the original.

We’re just waiting for The Fray to cover Arctic Monkeys. Wait, that might actually not be so bad…

  1. guinness fart<—good stuff

  2. Nickelback sounds like a fucking Guiness fart. And KOL blows now — although they used to be unbelievable. This is a shit combo either way because this song is puss.

“The only reason you’ve heard of Nickelback is because they’re effective “spokesmodels” for the corporate-approved “rock and roll lifestyle.” This isn’t music any more than what comes out of a singing Hannah Montana doll is music. Plastic, dollar signs and colorful imagery is all it takes to keep most people entertained.”

-Quite possibly one of the most accurate statements I’ve ever heard referring to Nickelback. I’ve had alot of fun over the years discussing Nickelback’s “music” with their fans…

  4. Kings of Leon is Nickelback for somewhat-indie kids.

  5. Yep, now you make even less sense.

  6. Sean: Looks like I hit a home run. Enjoy your Hannah Montana dolls, drink another beer, and go back to sleep.

  7. @dumbest_fan_base

You sir need remove the stick from your behind.

  8. Both bands suck. Kings of Leon are the most boring live band. Nickelback just needs to go away.

    END OF DISCUSSION!

  9. Couldn’t resist one additional comment on this non-event: No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence and taste of the public. Years ago, either Joe Strummer or Mick Jones of The (then disbanded) Clash was quoted as saying “Rock and roll is dead.” I think it was around 1989. Now that’s not an original sentiment, I know, but for the most part, it was true then and it’s true now. The only reason you’ve heard of Nickelback is because they’re effective “spokesmodels” for the corporate-approved “rock and roll lifestyle.” This isn’t music any more than what comes out of a singing Hannah Montana doll is music. Plastic, dollar signs and colorful imagery is all it takes to keep most people entertained.

  10. In twenty years, all bands with top 10 hits now will sound almost identical. There really isn’t that much difference between Kings of Leon and Nickelback. It’s all just homogenized “corporate rock” pablum designed to sell consumer goods. The faces change but the message stays the same — drink beer, party, borrow a lot of money, then figure out how you’re going to pay it back.

  11. @bobby

LOL, well im movie fanatic, but I’ve yet to see Breakfest Club, but I’ve always been meaning to see it.

P.S Estevez is an underated actor. :)

  12. re: debaser

    good call my man
they both suck (i mean I love “trani” as much as the next KOL fan circa 2003 but other than that…)

  13. @ Sean
Its me quoting a movie. See back in the day, there was this little movie called Breakfest Club. And from what I can tell you’re kinda like Emilio Estevez’s character. Trying to do right and thinking your word is final and just. And you know me. There’s a certain scene where the kids are voting to go get some pot and Andrew Clark (Estevez’s character) says something to this effect:
    Andrew Clark: [S]peak for yourself.
John Bender: Do you think I’d speak for you?! I don’t even know your language

You might not get the context seeing as you’re probably a 90’s baby. I don’t fault you for this.

  14. Could be worse, Chad could have taken a crack at it!!

  15. @bobby

    “let alone speak your language.”

Whats that suppose to mean ?

  16. @Sean
I wouldn’t debate your statement that they’re bigger. Better that’s all about personal taste.

But please don’t even try to peg me as a KOL fan. I don’t know you, let alone speak your language. Cause if you did know me you’d have realized that i left 45 minutes into KOL set at Sasquatch last spring. Although i did that to all the headliners at that fest.

  17. @bobby and todd

You guys are typical KOL fans. You think that people are idiots because they havent listened to KOL.

Nickelback are much bigger and better than KOL.

  18. Wow, that is terrible. I love how they cover the most “nickelback” like song that KOL has. Way to expand your horizons.

  19. I cant tell if these posts are serious…what happened to the whiskey drinking cocaine sniffin hooker fucking kings of leon. This talentless piece of shit singing kings of leon makes me want to eat my own shit. Jennifer i cant believe you read this blog

  20. Everyone seems to be covering KOl lately

  21. yes..amazing “it’s like seeing Creed covering Pearl Jam.” Just it would be much worse if it were

  22. @Jennifer

Your comment has blown my mind. You listen and go to Nickleback concerts which means that you listen to top 40 rock radio. The fact that you had never heard KOL original version baffles me a bit. Seeing as both songs get played side by side on that type of radio. Your story has holes in it? The only reasoning I can see here is that you’re 11 and you only listen to your older brothers (shitty) jock rock music?

  23. How is this blog worthy? They’ve been covering this song (and there have been videos of it) for months.

  24. This version is so much better than KOL’s. Nickelback rocks!!

  25. kol fans don’t think they’re better than everyone, just better than the kind of people who listen to nickelback.

  26. Sorry Zoe, KOL are boring as fuck.

  27. I never heard the KoL version of the song until after seeing Nickelback perform the song live in March. After that I searched and found the original version and really like both. I think Ryan Peake does a wonderful job singing the song. I’m glad that they have the balls to do a cover of a song presently being played on the radio and pull it off.

  28. Oh man. That’s rough. It’s like seeing Creed covering Pearl Jam.

  29. Nickelback are awesome, but they should cover better songs than this crap.

Kings Of Leon are just boring and overplayed whining.

  30. i just died a little inside

KOL aren’t the way they used to be…i dont really like anything from their new album

but Nickelback…hahaha they only made the recent mediocre KOL WORSE

  31. I am sorry, but I can not sit at my desk bored off my ass and read comments such as Kings of Leon’s music “sucks” or is “crap.” I think “Sex on Fire” - and ugh, “Use Somebody” - were so overplayed on the radio that even I was sick of hearing them. But, if you have not seen these boys in concert, there is no room to talk. They DELIVER in every sense of the word - their vocals are 10x more comparable than on their albums. With great lyrics and power-driven riffs, I’m not sure how they are ever considered sub-par. I’ve seen them twice and can honestly say they are, indeed, talented as hell.

Nickelback? A fart in the wind.

  32. both bands suck, so no harm done.

  33. Kings Of leon are crap. Most of their fanbase consist of hip, snobby people who think their better than everyone else.

Nickelback are a great band and made a lousy song bearable.

  34. this is seriously the fucking worst band on earth. i want to go see nickelback so i can throw a brick at one of them

  35. Oh my god. Seriously, stop.
