Watch: Arctic Monkeys - “Cornerstone”
So, how did the Arctic Monkeys followup their trippy, dark, and downright out-of-this-world — last I checked, giant versions of frontman Alex Turner don’t typically appear from the water — music video for Humbug’s “Crying Lightning”. How does a three minute offering of Turner, wearing a Christmasy red sweater, singing in front of a white screen with nothing more than headphones and a vintage microphone sound? I’m serious, that’s all that is too the newly unveiled, Richard Ayoade-directed video for “Cornerstone”, though I did forget to mention that the frontman does do a nifty spin about halfway through.

I remember Alex used to come into our chippy at the bottom of London Road. Always asked for scraps and a tail end.
Best music video ever made.
Even though this may be seen as one of Turner’s few but occasional fallouts into The Last Shadow Puppets territory, I think we need to redefine Arctic Monkeys - they’re not necessarily the purely edgy indie rock band we grew to love. And I think it’s hella good that we see a prominent “cool” band step out of its comfort zones. As for the pleasant Cornerstone and its video of the extremely simple and passive being inverted provocation: love it!
