It’s been a good year for Thievery Corporation. A Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package, madcap touring schedule, and meeting and opening for Paul McCartney are no small feats for this worldly group. But now they’re stepping it down a notch, closing ranks, and preparing to hit the studio for 2010.

In an interview with Billboard.com, co-lead Rob Garza said the band is going to finish their year with shows and enter the studio in January to record the follow-up to 2008’s Radio Retaliation. As for preparations for the album, the band revealed their darkest secret: They do nothing.

“That’s how all our records start,” Garza said. “We always have ideas in the back of our minds, but once you start (recording) it’s like some strange road trip; all of a sudden you wind up some place completely different. So there’s no sense in trying to choose a direction; in the end the record kind of dictates what it’s about rather than you.”

Despite the whirlwind of success, Garza said he and Eric Hilton recognize their place in the musical hierarchy and have just been happy to be along for the ride.

“A lot of our records are slow burns; they don’t hit and then are gone the next day,” Garza said. “They build up over the course of years, sometimes. We’re still kind of feeling that right now.”
