The xx’s Baria Qureshi takes a break, band cancels tour dates

An incredibly chaotic year, one which included the release of an acclaimed debut album and a slew of appearances at the CMJ Music Marathon earlier this month, has finally appeared to have caught up to the English outfit known as The xx. As The Quietus reports, guitarist Baria Qureshi has left the band (at least temporarily), choosing not to perform at the band’s gig in London last night (Oct. 28).

“Obviously this has been a really tough few days for us,” said bassist and singer Oliver Sim during the performance. “This is the first time we’ve played as a three piece. It’s devastating not having Baria here with us but you all being here has made us feel better… thank you very much.”

The xx released a statement shortly thereafter explaining that Qureshi did not play due to exhaustion and the band has thus decided to postpone the forthcoming European tour dates. They are next due to play in Frankfurt, Germany on November 3rd (click here for all upcoming dates).

That said, The Quietus goes on to report that the band does plan to discuss its future this weekend. We’ll keep you updated.

  1. Any new news on this story?? Everything all better now?

  2. Don’t believe what you read! No one is exhausted! It’s so easy do blame one person isn’t it? Dig deeper and you will find the answer.

  3. I’ll second Buzz’s scream of anguish. I want my The xx in Stockholm in January! I mean, it’s not like playing their music could exhaust anyone. Drowsy and fatigued is a part of their image. Look at Coldplay or U2 or RHCP or whoever. Now there’s exhausting.

  4. NOOOOOOO!!!! I will be so pissed if they cancel their Bottom Lounge date…
