After five days of shows between six different venues, Riot Fest came to an end. And who better to close out the fest than Chicago’s own
Alkaline Trio? Once Screeching Weasel finished up its set it seemed as though most of the crowd was leaving. But, as Trio’s set drew near, the crowd returned and I realized that Congress Theater provided a place for people to smoke. Perfect for this crowd. With minimal stage setup, fans got antsy as Derek Grant’s drums were uncovered and the 14-year-old girls really let loose when the “Agony & Irony” banners dropped from the ceiling.
From there, Matt Skiba, Derek Grant, and Dan Andriano took the stage blazing through “We’ve Had Enough”, “Fatally Yours” (devoted to Screeching Weasel’s guitarist who was married the night before), and a new song from the record that was recently finished, “Dine Dine”. AK3 tore through 15 songs in its set time which felt a little short for a hometown show but a nice ending to one of Chicago’s best festivals.
