The Magnetic Fields are back and real
We’ve been without The Magnetic Fields for so long now that we’ve been forced to resort to reliving past efforts. Fortunately, all that will change on January 26th when the Stephin Merritt-led outfit returns with its eighth studio album, a 13-track effort titled Realism (via Nonesuch). Details remain a bit sketchy after that, but back in October of 2008, Merritt did tell the Village Voice that the band’s next album would be the third in the “no-synth” trilogy (following 2004’s i and 2008’s Distortion). Plus, as Stereogum points out, Magnetic Fields’ album artwork generally does a good job illustrating what the album is about (i = a very personal affair; Distortion = lots of distortion), so you can probably make your own conclusions about Realism…
