As the release date of all release dates quickly approaches (that of course being January 12th, aka as the day Vampire Weekend will offers its incredibly anticipated sophomore effort, Contra), the New York quartet has begun to ramp up the publicity. Yesterday, they further expanded their upcoming global tour. Today, they unveiled a brand new music video for the album’s first single, “Cousins”.
Speaking with Rolling Stone just yesterday, Vampire Weekend described the song as far different than the previously revealed, rather laid back “Horchata”:
”‘Cousins’ is a song that we recorded in Mexico City. It’s got probably the most demanding bass part Chris [Baio] has wrote for himself, and probably the most demanding drum part Chris Tomson ever did for himself,” said multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij. “So it’s a demanding song.”
Equally demanding must have been the creation of “Cousins” aforementioned new video. Though just two-and-a-half minutes in length, the clips features quite a bit of looping, driving, and outfit and face changing. You’ll see what I mean in a moment.
In the end, the video certainly lives up to the song’s “demanding nature,” both for the band and the listener. I doubt I’ll be the only one who takes in everything with just one viewing.
