Summer Festivus 2010: Our best guestimates…
Part of our task in updating the Festival Outlook is searching the many message boards (Coachella, Inforoo, and Lolla!) and searching for links or any hearsay that might give credence to a lineup confirmation or any rumor that’s out there. But we never really get an opportunity to share our predictions for who will be playing and where. We figured we’d take a moment to do that now and predict some bigger names we think will be playing at the country’s five biggest and best music festivals.
However, a note before we start: Many of our predictions our just that, resulting from what makes the most sense. That said, we did incorporate some of the rumors we have heard. Now with that in mind…
Coachella (April 16-18; Indio, CA):
- Muse - Already confirmed.
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Los Angeles outfit officially ends its hiatus with a headlining spot at Coachella.
- Pavement - The legendary indie rockers will make their 2010 festival debut in Indio.
- Beastie Boys - Coachella’s other big comeback.
- Faith No More - Supposedly touring the West Coast in April? Seems like a no brainer at this point.
- Vampire Weekend - A solid sophomore album earns you a sub-headlining spot.
- LCD Soundsystem - Will be touring then.
Sasquatch! (May 29-31; George, WA)
- Pavement - Already confirmed.
- Pixies - Sasquatch’s newest rumor is more than plausible.
- Phoenix - Bigger than ever, and they’ll be making another round in the U.S. come next Spring
Bonnaroo (June 10-13; Manchester, TN):
- U2 - At first, we didn’t think it was a much of a possibility. But with a Glastonbury appearance now confirmed, it looks like Bono and Co. will be following The Boss’ footsteps.
- The Who - Super Bowl halftime performers have a history of hitting up Bonnaroo. Plus, it fills the festival’s classic rock spot.
- Jay-Z - Hova is no Kanye.
- The String Cheese Incident - This year’s Phish.
- The Dead - It’s Bonnaroo’s turn.
- Pixies - Keeping the reunion going.
- My Morning Jacket - My Morning Jacket and Bonnaroo belong together.
Pitchfork - ???; Chicago, IL)
- Pavement - P is for Pitchfork… and Pavement
- Vampire Weekend - Another band that owes quite a bit to to the music website.
Lollapalooza (August 6-8; Chicago, IL):
- Muse - This year’s The Killers.
- Jay-Z - Has yet to give The Blueprint 3 a proper Chicago performance.
- R.E.M. - Michael Stipe and Co. have yet to make a Lollapalooza performance. With a new album on the way, this year will be the perfect opportunity.
- Soundgarden - Chris Cornell + Perry Farrell = BFF’s
- Beastie Boys - The trio will return to Grant Park to make good after last year’s cancellation.
- Arcade Fire - They’ll be playing lots of places by then.
- Weezer - We had to squeeze Rivers in somewhere.

Pitchfork 2010 predictions:
Friday: Echo & Bunnymen, Nas, Saint Etienne, Mudhoney (optimistic, but even 1/4 would be great.)
Saturday & Sunday: Pavement, LCD Soundsystem, Band of Horses, Calexico, Antony, Hot Chip, Dirty Projectors, Bat For Lashes, Jay Reatard, Liars, Black Mountain, Wale, Gang Gang Dance, Los Campesinos!, Micachu, Woods, Girls, Free Energy, Neon Indian, Flying Lotus, Joker, Washed Out, Kurt Vile, Ganglians, Real Estate, Abe Vigoda, Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast, Freddie Gibbs, Sleigh Bells, Surfer Blood, Suckers, Smith Westerns, Pictureplane, Bear in Heaven, Javelin
(Some of) My Bonnaroo 2010 Predicitions
Airborne Toxic Event, Akron/Family, Arcade Fire, Bat for Lashes, Black Crowes, Black Lips, Blitzen Trapper, Coldplay, Dan Deacon, Deer Tick, Devendra Banhart, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Fleet Foxes, Gaslight Anthem, Islands, Los Campesinos!, Metric, Modest Mouse, Monsters of Folk, Noah and the Whale, Peter, Bjorn and John, String Cheese Incident, Vampire Weekend, Weezer, The Who
i think we can put to rest the hating of all these bandsby uniting under the fact that NO ONE WANTS U2 at bonnaroo.
Anonymous, you may be right. I think my distaste for RHCP should be directed at the real weak-spot of the group: Anthony. Seriously, he has been what makes RHCP suck, he is what STILL makes RHCP suck, and he is what will make RHCP CONTINUE to suck in the future.
Obviously Flea is talented. John F is also definitely a great guitarist, with a unique sound. Even Dave Navarro was good, if not a huge push in a different direction for them. And Chad, well, he’s pretty good too, I guess. But Anthony? Geez, he always acts like an idiot! And his voice isn’t good either. And his lyrics suck, but that’s what you’d expect from a moron like that…
So, Anonymous, I apologize.
why no predictions for Rothbury 2010? Not sure I plan on hitting up any of these other fests after having seen what Rothbury 2009 threw down. If you have some thoughts on who might be at Roth come share at rothfest.net
peace
for what its worth, Muse > The Strokes and Jay Z > Outkast live. Albums are a different story, but live, that’s what’s up.
“RHCP @ Coachella = lame”
Truth.
But RHCP headlining one night.
+
Faith No more headlining the other night.
= Brilliant Marketing Move
Especially if you’re familiar with the rivalry between Anthony and Patton and the fact that Anthony personally went out of his way to get Mr. Bungle kicked off of seversl European festival shows that the RHCP were headlining, and now Mr. Bungle is dead and gone. The RHCP are still around doing shitty shows and making shitty records, but the world isn’t going to see another live Mr. Bungle show (at least with Patton singing) anytime soon.
That would be an amazing grudge-match festival line up.

Especially if you’re familiar with the rivalry between Anthony and Patton and the fact that Anthony personally went out of his way to get Mr. Bungle kicked off of several European festival shows that the RHCP were headlining, and now Mr. Bungle is dead and gone. The RHCP are still around doing shitty shows and making shitty records, but the world isn’t going to see another live Mr. Bungle show (at least with Patton singing) anytime soon.

I really feel like Rage Against The Machine will make a Bonnaroo headlining spot…I really hope not because Im participating in a 200km bike ride for cancer that weekend
well fuck you people. John Frusciante is an amazing guitarrist and he plays incredibly well live.
vampire weekend will not headline pitchfork. with two chicago festival performances under their belt, they will play a decent sized chicago venue (the riv, maybe aragon?) instead of a festival. plus, i think pitchfork is looking for bigger headliners this year (ex. pavement).
Kid,
I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on SuperFly sticking to their supposed formats as they had Phish headline two nights last year. But let’s just say U2 goes on Friday night (it’s not SuperFly’s fault U2 is playing Denver on Saturday), and MMJ ends the fest Sunday night bridging the 20-30 year creative lag that most jam bands find themselves in (which MMJ has managed to avoid). It’s true MMJ doesn’t have the inarguable “classic” pedigree that the Who has, but they do have a solid history with Bonnaroo.
I really don’t know who would do Thursday night, I just think AC/DC would be fun to see. I’ve heard rumblings of McCartney for Saturday… which as much of a Beatles fan as I am, would be about as much fun/wasteful of the Saturday night headliner spot as Bruce was last year.
Yes, Radiohead was amazing.
Please don’t shoot yourself if U2 plays… we really don’t want two Sunday, Bloody Sundays at the Roo.
No way Andy, if U2 played bonnaroo, they would most definitely be the Saturday night headlining spot, with a slight possibility of Friday, but definitely not sunday. Saturday always holds the biggest band, and ass arrogant as U2 is, (which they are arrogant) they are still the biggest name in the world compared to the rest of the bands listed, besides maybe The Who.
And sunday’s headlining spot ALWAYS is filled with the classic jam band. Just look at all the past schedules since 2006.
06 was Radiohead Saturday night (greatest show of my life)
Phil Lesh Sunday
07 was The Police saturday night
Widespread sunday
08 was Pearl Jam Saturday night
Widespread Sunday
09 was Springsteen Saturday
Phish Sunday (and friday)
I cant really see Superfly productions change the format that drastically. to put ‘AC/DC’ thursday night??? then ‘MMJ’ Saturday night headlining???? And U2, if they play bonnaroo WILL NEVER play on a sunday night.
And once again…. U2 is arrogant….douchebag.
P.S.
Uno, Dos, Tres….Quatorseeeeee!
Put a bullet in my head if I hear that shit at bonnaroo
i actually don’t like the chili peppers very much either but i think pea fucks radioheads shit up.
no sir i am not on crack. never touch the stuff. i just don’t like radiohead very much.
pea is a better song than every radiohead song.>>
You must know that’s bullshit. I’m a RHCP fan ’til the end, and I find that statement beyond ludicrous. “Pea” is better than “Fake Plastic Trees”, “Bulletproof…”, and “Lucky”? Well, you sir must be on crack.
why pick on flea? him and chad smith are the ones with talent in the band. pea is a better song than every radiohead song. so don’t get you pink satin panties in a bunch.
oh, and btw, RHCP suck live AND on record.
Oh, Thom Yorke, what were you thinking…? I suppose offering Flea a role in doing something musically redemptive as opposed to his normal day job IS a very humanitarian gesture of you…
1) U2 would definitely take a Sunday (or Friday time slot)… just because you don’t like U2, doesn’t mean THEY are as arrogant as YOU think they are, you stupid douchebags.
2) Why all the fuss about Pavement? I really don’t see how sooo many people seem to be pining for them to play since they’ve only sold like, what… 10 albums? Stop recycling hyped enthusiasm just because you see a band’s name pop up in search engines results tyed to fringe music publications. 3 people care if Pavement shows up to ANY of these festivals… the rest of us want those big slots filled by bands that we actually like.
3) The Dead said they would never play Bonnaroo now after Phil Leesh was bumped for Kanye’s performance, so scratch that.
Bonnaroo would be great:
Thursday night - AC/DC
Friday night - The Who
Saturday night - My Morning Jacket (with late night Flaming Lips)
Sunday night - U2
Pavement are headlining Golden Plains in March - that will be their first festival date in 2010, not Coachella.
Now i know why i don’t like you roffman, you like RHCP!
oh and your journalism is horrific.
P.S. Nice errors in the opening paragraph. Way to proof…
if soundgarden reunites anywhere… i’m there in a heartbeat
I think Massive Attack is a possibility with their new album out next year, I’m hoping for the Mars Volta too
lol@KidKharma
ill see you in hell debaser…
Agreed. But Pavement is doing the same i guess.
hahaha! you tossers. rhcp are a shitty live live band and you all know it!
It’s conceivable that the Pixies make the cross Atlantic trip from Primavera to Sasquatch! I guess we just spaced on the fact of how difficult that would be when doing this posting. That said, the rumor is prediction, well, is still technically alive.
Why are the Pixies already wrong for Sasquatch? I hope your right but I also hope that the Jack Johnson rumor is NOT true.
Replace Muse with The Strokes and Jay Z with Outkast and I would lose my shit for lolla. And yes I’m aware those two names aren’t very realistic.
no debaser is right red hot chili peppers suck live. anthony kiedis is a terrible performer. he can barely keep up with the rhythm of his own lyrics. plus they never play anything off of one hot minute which is a crime but i know the whole dave navarro era is a touchy subject for them.
well I hope they blew chunks all over your stupid face debaser!!!!
debaser, you’re a joke
kidkharma, i’ve seen RHCP three times at various points in their career and all three times, they blew chunks.
This is what bonnaroo should do.
Jay Z- Friday Night
The Who-Saturday Night
My Morning Jacket- Late night saturday
The Dead-Sunday
Too early to predict ACL. that shit was just like a month ago.
Debaser, please explain why RHCP is one of the worst live shows ever. I am sure your live show is worse……. so shut up.
Surprised to not see Flaming Lips anywhere on these lists
Thanks for all the comments anyone! Still think Jay-Z is realistic for Lollapalooza, even if he is playing Chicago in March. Looks like Pixies for Sasquatch! & Chili Peppers for Coachella are already wrong though.
why no prediction for acl?
U2 can fly from Denver to Manchester. Not that hard
How are the Pixies playing Sasquatch (5/29-31) when they’re playing Primavera in Barcelona (5/27-29)?
How is U2 playing Bonnaroo (6/10-13) when they’re playing Denver on 6/12?
if that bonnaroo prediction is anywhere near the truth i will piss my pants
if those were the lolla headliners (minus soundgarden, would love them over R.E.M but it wont happen) i would buy tickets instantly
rhcp are one of the worst live bands ever.
RHCP are not going to be at Coachella. especially if they were there three years ago. Beastie boys are waaaay more likely.
I’ll stick to the message board predictions tyvm.
If these predictions stand, Coachella will be very underwhelming.
Max, U2 playing ‘Roo is totally possible.
They’re playing Glasto on 6/25.
Playing Edmonton on 6/23 & MN on 6/27.
The reason they’re taking time between shows is to move the huge claw stage setup.
Throwing RHCP into the rumor mix is completely retarded; they wouldn’t have them back to headline for the third time in seven years. And, Win has stated AF won’t be doing festivals next year if they can help it.
Also, learn to spell.
Call it what it is! You steal content. Pilfer and rape.
Jay Z wont be playing Lolla. He’s playing the United Center 3/18/09.
There is a glaring grammatical error in your introductory paragraph, CoS.
And in response to the comment about Pavement below, no one said it would be their first festival appearance. They said it would be their 2010 festival debut as in, the first fest they play on this reunion. We all know they played festivals a decade ago. They also played Lolla in 1995 and I’m sure they played others.
I’m really hoping they make it to Bonnaroo. I was under the impression that Pixies would be done by then, but I would be thrilled to see them there, too.
I wish people would stop calling 3-year breaks between albums a “hiatus”. People are all of a sudden acting like bands don’t spread their tours out by a few years. I think there should be a rule that an act has to be inactive for a decade before you can call it a “hiatus”.
If Pavement play Coachella, it wouldn’t be their debut… they played the first one!
Being a European festival changes things, but I’m surprised to hear that. Maybe The Rolling Stones will end up playing Glasto…
Regardless of the day, I think that while they could play a normal set at Roo and fly to Denver the next day, it would be unlikely that they would want to do that. They are taking 3 days rest between each show on this tour, and to suddenly have to play Roo, then fly out to Denver the next day sounds pretty exhausting for the group.
The top bill also plays Saturday at Glastonbury. U2 is confirmed to be playing Friday.
Ken: the top act plays on Saturday. I find it hard to believe that Bono’s ego could take being billed second on a festival lineup.
U2 at Lolla isn’t happening. They play Chicago in July. http://www.u2.com/tour/
There is also a big gap between these dates:
19 July, 2010 New York NY
10 August, 2010 Frankfurt
So Lollapalooza is a possibility too then?
although U2s tour gap is a reasonable thought for them at bonnaroo, something just tells me it isn’t going to happen
U2 can definitely do back to backs if they don’t have to use their own set at Bonnaroo,(which they won’t) the only reason they haven’t been able to to back to back dates is their elaborate set, even though I think they have four of them in tow through out the tour.
Agreed, Roffman.
And, I’m already planning for next year’s Lolla since this past one was fantastic (even if it was super hot).
U2’s not playing Bonnaroo when they have a Saturday Denver show that weekend.
RHCP @ Anywhere = Amazing.
Fixed.
Well done!
RHCP @ Coachella = lame
