Probably not (I know it was a tease). But, some sources are saying it’s a possibility that the howling enigma could take on the role of Bilbo in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Jackson spent some time at a party in celebration of his film adaptation of Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones discussing how auditions for the Lord of the Rings prequel are going. But, Jackson didn’t mention Tom Waits alongside such potential stars as James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe, or Martin Freeman. According to one of Ain’t It Cool editor Harry Knowles’ “trusted sources,” however, Waits is up for consideration for portraying the hairy footed hobbit as well (via Paste). And let’s be honest, though the role seems fitting for Radcliffe and those other prospects, it’d be quite a treat to see a man as strange as Waits perform such a peculiar role.
When Paste Magazine further inquired, Waits’ publicist responded: “No one has contacted him about this role.” Though Waits is a credited actor, appearing in such films as Down By Law and Coffee and Cigarettes, it usually take Jim Jarmusch to get him on screen. So while the rumor mill may be whirling, I wouldn’t get too attached to the idea. But, luckily you’ll get a chance to see Waits in the Denzel Washington starring The Book of Eli. Until then that Glitter and Doom live album should tide you over.
TAGGED AS: Peter Jackson, The Hobbit, Tom Waits
Those were the days of hobbits…
Poetry and Gandalf…
Gollum, all I had was you and all you had was me…
Hobbits got bangs. BANGS, matt. Like George Harrison on the cover of Beatles For Sale. Tom Waits wearing a banged wig.
Okay, I’m in too.
Remus, you’re wrong!
Bilbo was an old-young man in the book and Waits’ face would be great!
Bilbo in the Hobbit was a wee bit younger than Tom Waits’ face would allow at the age of 60, I’m afeared. Waits as Gollum makes more sense if we are dreaming. He could do that little bent dance where he holds up his foot and wiggles it around, while employing THAT VOICE. I’m sure Andy Serkis would be most displeased with that missing paycheck, though. Um, AND Tom is also playing the dingdanged devil in the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. That one finished filming right before the Glitter and Doom Tour began and will supposedly and finally be out in a few weeks. So he’ll be coming around the Misty Mountains when he comes?
