Blink-182 coming to a movie theater near you

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Man, I really love learning about the history of bands, but I hate documentaries”? Well, we’ve got a treat for you. Reunited punk phoenix Blink-182 is not only hitting the studio, but there’s going to be a film made about the California trio. But don’t get your hopes too high up: It’s totally unauthorized.

MTV is reporting that 24-year old filmmaker Brandon Flores is working with friends and Blink fans in San Diego to make Blink, a movie about the band’s early days. The film would follow Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and original drummer Scott Raynor as they try and make it big. Queue Raynor leaving, the boys meeting Travis Barker and you’ve got a happy ending where the boys go on to sell millions of records. The idea, Flores said, came from the docu-drama Lords of Dogtown.

“I saw that movie and I thought, ‘The guys in Blink deserve a movie like that about them,’ ” Flores told MTV News. “They have an awesome life, and they’re one of my favorite bands. So the idea got in my head, and over the summer – right around the time of the Blink reunion tour – my friends and I started writing a script about their early days.”

Despite not having the band’s approval (at least yet), Flores said he plans on making the film. And since the tiny crew plan on staying close to Anne (Mark’s sister) and her recounting of those surely awkward days in the 2001 book “Tales From Beneath Your Mom”, it’ll be authentic if anything else. While originally meant as a small-end production, the film stirred up controversy after one of its Craigslist casting ads made its way onto AbsolutePunk.net.

“We’ve been getting a lot of angry e-mails, people asking me why we’re making a movie, if the guys in Blink are still alive or saying we’re going around trying to make up history, since we weren’t there at the beginning,” Flores said. “I try to tell them that I’m a Blink fan, and I’m trying my best not to f— up history. We’ve been getting help from a lot of fans who were there at the beginning. We want to do this right.”

With a $55,000 budget and a few casting decisions almost wrapped up (“We’ve gotten a lot of Marks, and we’re close to casting one”), this film could become a reality. Whether or not they get the band’s OK or even a few songs to use is another question. But what say you, Mr. Hoppus?

“No, I didn’t know anything about the movie. I wonder how it pays?” Hoppus wrote in an e-mail to MTV on December 7th. “Should I try out for the part of Tom?”
